A Life of Pictures Part 2

The second part of the interview with Photographer Vladimir Sichov.

What is your favorite cover?

e5312e24d166ec0f881326a8e734ed12The November Cover of Paris Match showing The Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Romania Revolution Cover.

Why are you still motivated to take pictures?

I am a street life photographer.  I look for moments, unknown people.  I take pictures fast.   The right way to be a street photographer is to be quick while not drawing attention to you.   I place tape over the camera labels and numbers for discretion.

What is your favorite device?

I like fixed lens.  I used Leica until 92 then switched to Canon.

Who was your artistic influence?

Bresson was a God with his sense of composition.  He was the master and everyone else is several steps below.  We spoke several times.  I asked him how many good pictures he made.  He said around 40.

Who was the most difficult subject?

The Vogue Studio and those white walls.   I prefer action to studio, black and white over color.

Politics and politicians have played a major role in your works.

In May 1981 French President Giscard lost the election to Mitterand.  I was assigned to go to his house in the Middle of France with other press people. All only had 20 minutes.  After he learned I was Russian he spoke to my team for over 40 minutes.    He said his favorite politician was Brezhnev.  I spent 2 week with him on holiday in the Holy Land after he left office.   His wife was religious.

And Chirac?

Prime Minister Jacques Chirac opened a world for me.   I was a stateless so he arranged for me to have a French Passport.

Having covered so politics and events, what do you think of the current state of Europe?

If I had written articles on what I thought I would have been fired immediately.  There is a body of unelected people (EU Commission) making disastrous decision for Europe.  There is no Ford to build an industry.   So much has been destroyed, from textile to steel production.

What were the most interesting assignments?

There are many but some now:

I was in the Soviet Union covering the Michael Jackson concert in 1989 before the coup.  I felt something was going on so I called my editor and decided to stay in Moscow a little while longer.  The tanks rolled into the city.  I saw it all in front of The Russian White House.   I was wounded, shot.

When Gorbachev went into exile I was with him for 3 days.

Vladimir Horowitz-018Horowitz was fun.  I wanted to show him doing more than at the piano.  Russians love ice cream and playing chess.  He asked me if I loved ice cream.  Yes!

I made images of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge at their apartment.  One of those images was used at the Christie’s auction in 2009. It was rare assignment because they did not normally allow images made in their flat.

I accompanied Keith Haring here (Berlin) to take pictures of him painting the Wall for the mural.  He was really fast.   That was in 1986.    I made pictures of him doing work on the Grace Jones video.

What advice would you give a photographer?

Love what are doing and you will never have a problem.  If you find a job you like and you will never work.  Do not expect rewards.

Cushnie Et Ochs at Berlin Fashion Week

The New York City based label showed its Resort Collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin.   The 90’s were back according to the designers for looks that were solid, wearable with many looks holding the body together.   Soft, solid colors were the norm with a bust of a chromatic blue dress then to small floral patterns to choose for the lady going out in the evening.

Behind the Scenes at the Dimitri Fashion Show

We were behind the scenes at the Dimitri Show for the Spring 2017 season at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.  Once again we documented the workings of all the teams putting together a major runway show from beginning to end.  It was quite amazing witnessing the hair, makeup, and styling units working in sync to meet the schedule.

Fashion Week Berlin 2016

Seek and Premium – During Berlin Fashion Week many brand trade fairs are convened for buyers and sellers to meet to discuss and arrange what will be sold in stores the following seasons.  While it lacks the glamour of a runway show, this is where the real business of fashion is done, with over 2500 collections of all sorts from street ware to luxury bags competing for attention for the opportunity,  a small brand could go from obscurity to becoming a household name based on a decision of a retail buyer to sell a collection in a store.

As press, the trade fairs are valuable source for gagging upcoming fashion trends in colors, materials and fabrics, or shapes, or perhaps finding a label to champion.

Vladimir Sichov is a professional news photographer.  Over the span of his 36 year career he has covered many events and stories from Paris Fashion Week  to the Fall of the USSR.

Fashion Week Milan Men 2016

Fashion Week Milan Men 2016

Menswear looks from  Milan based fashion brands were on display throughout the city from Fashion Shows to Presentations in stunning settings.  Being a Fashion Capital, Milan offers a myriad of designers producing clothing, shoes, bags, and other accessories for the well-dressed man of the season who desires relaxed tailoring.   Menswear fashion taste is consistent; a definition of male elegant sex appeal and seduction combined with soft fabrics, some collections were muted while others were a mix of hues and patterns.   A luxury accessory here and there can do wonders for a look, Milan lived up to its reputation for leather goods with shoes and bag in all shapes, colors, and sizes.

I was proactive in Milan from the time I landed to the time I left, racing around the city with a smartphone app (installed on my second day) or asking police and super friendly metro station workers for directions was a fun way to get around the city from one location to the next for an interview or conferences held by Camera Nazinale della Moda Italiana.   Public transport in Milan is excellent, from the romantic vintage trams to the modern underground system.  Walking around can took a bit of skill because of the city’s triangle planned streets, north and south seemed one but I managed.

Eat your heart out Downton Abbey!  The surroundings of the presentations were impressive, and in some cases, stunning.  Medieval palaces, 19th century villas in the heart of the city, fashion storytelling with an arc of fineness.  Yes, I was awe inspired looking over a shoe collection with a 400 year old tapestry in the background.   Moving forward to the modern locales, which were equally impressive included: garages, roof top cafes, and a shop with an 8 meter mannequin, there was not a single dull place to view next Spring’s looks.
