A Balancing Act at the Berlinale #73

The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival is the first fully in-person Berlinale event since 2020.

Before the festival, Executive Director Mariette Rissenbeek and Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian spoke about their objectives this year. Overcoming the impact of the pandemic and closer ties with the U.S. are two such challenges. Meanwhile, there has also been a funding boost from the German government. The pair also explained how their program selection attempts to balance harsh realities with escapism.

The festival opened on February 16th with a grand red carpet ceremony. The television and stage show was produced by the German public broadcaster ZDF/3Sat. Their filming included the exterior red carpet, the hallway of the Berlinale Palast, and the theatre interiors. The ceremony started at 7.30pm local time. Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian were joined on stage by Jury President Kristen Stewart and further speakers.

The Rebecca Miller directed She Came to Me was the special opening ceremony screening. A composer in a creative crisis meets a tugboat captain by chance in a Brooklyn Bar. From here a seemingly unlikely strong bond grows between the two. This funny and sophisticated comedy drama is set against a backdrop of a socially divided America. Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei and Anne Hathaway are the leading stars who shine in their roles. Ultimately, this was a heartening and entertaining way to begin the festival.

Eighteen films from around the world will compete in competition for the Silver and Golden Bears. There are also sixteen films also in the second competition, Encounters. The program conspicuously omitted films from Russia this year. However, Sean Penn’s documentary Superpower represents the omnipresence of the Ukraine conflict. Otherwise, films like Honary Bear inductee Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans are intended to be a lighter affair.

One film in the main competition, Blackberry, is adapted from the bestselling book “Losing the Signal”. Directed by Matt Johnson, it chronicles the rise and rapid fall of the world’s first Smartphone. Glenn Howerton and Jay Buruchel are the central characters who play the fallen business partners. Commendable in art direction is the authentic period detail from the early 1990s to the late 2000s. Moreover, Blackberry humorously portrays the world of fast-paced business, corruption, and the pressure of staying ahead

This year’s Berlinale Award Ceremony will take place on Saturday 25th February.

Louis Vuitton Gets The Beat

Filling the shoes of Virgil Abloh was never going to be an easy job. The menswear designer made a mark in streetwear before heading Louis Vuitton mens line. Virgil was hitting a stride, the sudden death of the African American born creative head in 2021 shocked the fashion world.

Pharrell

The French luxury house announced Pharrell Williams as its new head. Now, this will certainly get attention. Mr. Williams is brilliant music artist, just look over his resume. In style, he has played a coy game by flirting with non aggressive but in the line looks. Wearing a Black Chanel Jacket, short trouser suits and oversized hats have placed the Virginia Beach native on many Best Dressed Lists.

What the multi Grammy Winner lacks in formal fashion training will certainly be compensated in media coverage. As the competition for attention gets harder and harder brands want to stand out. But is Star Power enough to engage youthful buyers who are easily seduced by filtered Instagram posts? Brand loyalty these days is about as lasting as Tic Tok Reel. A music superstar taking an end of the collection bow in Paris, the replicating global headlines could sell millions of bags and colognes for the $20 billion brand or the inspiration of catty memes.

Yes, I am looking at this appointment with a bit of a side eye combined with curiosity. Personally, I know many menswear designers who could put together a dazzling collection if they had the deep pocket resources of global corporation. LVMH has thrown the dice with unproven designers in the past, Galliano at Dior, yet this is a high profile gamble for both sides. This June all eyes will be on Paris for Pharrell’s debut. Yes, I will watch, online of course.

Schon and Lovely

I did not anything about the Italian city Lucca. A German friend recommended the ancient Tuscany settlement calling it “Schon” meaning “Lovely”. Located thirty minutes from both Pisa and the beach by train, Lucca for any traveler would be a great stop off point to explore the region.

What struck me about the walled city were the picturesque settings of squares, narrow streets and towers. Strolling around looking up, forward, back or around there is a scene or architectural style ready for a photo. Blessed with many cafes and restaurants with authentic atmosphere, the morning cafe or dinner options are numerous.

Staying in Lucca for one day was not enough, next time, more.

400, not on my dime,

NOPE! I cannot recommend paying $400 for a pair of sneakers made in who knows where. If I had asked my parents for pair when I was in the targeted buying group these trainers are targeted she would have responded “Not on my dime, McDonald’s is always hiring”. LVMH acquired American brand Tiffany & Co in 2021. The famous blue colored jeweler has been an exclusive place of dreams luxury staple for 185 years. Those days are over in the era of “masstige” where are labels are trading up or down.

Partnering with sportswear titan Nike, the first of I am sure, many co-branding partnerships signals the new owners plan on making their New York based holding more accessible to a younger generation.

A high priced sneaker with a colored “Swish” packed in a fancy branded box brings out the cynical side of me.
