Back to the Camera

After using mobile phone cameras for coverage, the decision has been made to go back to using a photographic camera. Do not get it wrong, phone cameras are convenient, handy but the disadvantages are numerous. Foremost, the battery life is limited.  After a few hours of producing pictures and videos, suddenly one bar on the screen.  Additionally, mobile phone batteries have to be replaced.

Secondly, the numerous creative options on photography cameras are expansive. The presets there are many image techniques for a shoot and in post-production. Plus, the images are just sharper.  For a lowlight fashion show, cameras have more optimal settings.

Unpredictable, but I’m still going to Pitti Uomo

Pitti Uomo 2025 starts January 14th in Florence Italy.  The bi-annual menswear fashion trade fair showcases brands, style and trends from around the world. The fashion world faces strong headwinds as economies slow down, consumers cut back and geo-politics rattle business.  During a Zoom Call with Director of Communication Lapo Cianchi, the head gave one word, “Unpredictable” is the general outlook in the fashion world. The frank honesty was welcomed.  The business model for fashion trade show is being called into question. Since Covid, the attendance numbers have not recovered.  Even so, Pitti Uomo is a special gathering for men’s fashion lovers.

With over 800 exhibitors signed, this upcoming apparel forum is an important event on the calendar.  MM6 from French house Maison Margiela hits the runway with “do not follow the rules” looks.   The other designer on the calendar, Satoshi Kuwata, comes to Tuscany with his label Setchu.  According to the brand’s web page “a fusion of two cultures” is the basis of the gender-neutral aesthetic.

Fashion and lifestyle concepts continue to evolve and merge.  Concepts of Community and Active Style of Living have emerged as consumers push more into experiences over brand linkage.  Producers, buyers and creatives seek shared passions with communal relationships and passions for the same ideas and values.

Knees Up, a new concept store centered around Marathon enthusiasts has a prominent role at Pitti Uomo. The popular retail space located in East London offers fashion, coffee, sportswear and a place to recover from physical training.  Several athletic brands will exhibit with the first-time headliner in Fortezza da Basso.

The same questions linger, but have become more obvious. As customers move away from well-known masstige labels, will retailers take a chance on small brands?  Perhaps in these rattled times, a small bet can pay back big returns.

Of course, we expect the traditional Dandy pageantry in the center courtyard.

Pitti Uomo starts January 14th until 17th in Florence Italy.

An Out Of Sync Gladiator 2

Ridley Scott’s 2000 Best Picture directorial work Gladiator was a seminal moment in 21st century cinema.  Oscar winner Russel Crowe’s broody Maximus made an impression on filmgoers.   Gladiator 2 arrived in cinemas this week.  It is best to leave well enough alone. This come twenty-four years later sequel is an out of sync spectacle.

Paul Mescal has some big sandals to fill as Lucius, the less brutal, more pondering vengeful son of Maximus. Not lacking in the spirit of role but lacking the grit, the Irish actor looked as if he was learned how to swim without an instructor for the first time.

Gladiator 2
Denzel Washington as Macrinus

Denzel Washington as the scheming Macrinus was relishing his role at times the twice Academy Award earner overshadowed a cast that came off as having taken a high dosage of Xanax.

The Wikipedia referenced script has the usual assortment of Roman Empire intrigue for the civic crown.  I, Claudius captured these characters better.

Scott plays well with the visual, too bad the whole Gladiator 2 was just a lot of humdrum separate parts.

2.5/5 stars.

Gladiator 2 is in European Cinemas.  Running Time: 2 hours 28 mins.

Release Date in the US on November 22nd.

A Talent Boxed In

Luther: Never Too Much is the story of performer Luther Vandross. The crooner who was “Too Black”, “Too Big” got boxed in by the music business. The color codes of the industry meant the New York born native never gained wide stream acceptance, i.e. the White Audiences embrace. After stints on Sesame Street then music arranging for super star David Bowie, Luther embarked on a R&B solo career. However his success in a “defined” Black American genre came at a price. The eight Grammy Winner’s record label refused to allow him to cross over, despite working with mainstream artists Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Bette Midler.

Director Dawn Porter’s soft touch balances presentation with a touch of grievance. “Life is a perfect line of ironies” goes the expression.

Luther Vandross passed away in 2005.

Luther: Never Too Much is in cinemas and available on MAX.

Luther: Never Too Much was screened at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

The 47th Influencer

The Donald Trump influence on Fashion and Masculinity will be felt in the fashion industry.  Professionals should not underestimate the influence of a President’s outlook on style.  John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, the President went hatless on a cold January day, that styling decision placed a once accessory staple to the back of the men’s closet for a generation.  Men dropped the headwear.   Of course, his First Lady who needs no introduction, Jackie, is a timeless fashion icon.

This election could mark an unexpected shift in many ways. People turned away from mass media for opinions.  Mainstream channels took a credibility hit.   Not only did they get it wrong by a September Issue Size Vogue issue, television commentators could not hide the disbelief on live television.   The fashion press misread voter sentiments, publications placed a bet on the wrong horse, then lost. What does that say about their insight?  No amount of deflection or no comments can cover up the scale of this pubic misread.  After putting Kamala Harris on numerous covers, no one expects Head Editor in charge Anna Wintour to have a public make up phone call to Melania Trump.

Creative directors will need a rethink over the next months and years.  Since the term “gender” became a political toxin, consumers may move away from gender free fashion, out of style.  Sure, the houses can produce it. Who will buy the collections outside of four stores in NYC and SF? The marketing and messaging will take a different course.  Companies are ditching DEI initiatives faster than a Shein can copy a runway look.  Bottom line decisions trump social movements in boardrooms.   The 47th Unites States leader’s 75 million voters are too big a market to ignore.

There could be a silver lining, style hope.   Brands could become counter reactionary, more underground.  The Gap was born in the counter culture of San Francisco.  The Mini Skirt shock off the feminine rigidity of the fifties.

The 47th head of the United States will leave an imprint on the way we dress, like or not.

Inspired Diversity

Inspiration comes when it wants.  One never knows when.   At IFA 2024 while attending a press conference for a what I thought would be a presentation of a security light, hardly high value glamor at a big technology show, I did a double take.  The presenter was a Black Guy.  Usually, at these get togethers an Asian or White man takes the stage.  The technology industry is as diverse as a Southern American University Fraternity.   Yes, tech management believes in the principle of the ideal, but not the implementation

Fabrice Kalhoun presenting a Security Camera

Reolink is a Chinese security Camera technology brand based in Shenzhen.  When I got the press invite for a product unveiling my first instinct was to pass.  Home security is not my tech topic. But, after positive engagement with the public relations representative, I scheduled an attendance.  During my many years of covering product unveilings at gadget trade fairs, I cannot remember one presiding over by a person of color.  Normally, the speakers are Asian or White.  This time Reolink gave the microphone to Mr. Fabrice Kalhoun, a Person of Color.  The African born engineer gave an enthusiastic presentation of the new home security camera he designed.   During our post presentation talk, Fabrice told me his story of studying in China. While in graduate school, Reolink recruited the engineer him out of university to become a part of the company’s team.

I called him “a tech unicorn” in modern reality. Normally, an African man front and center of an Asian company is a politically correct advertisement showing the brand is part of the DEI trend.  Not in this case, Fabrice’s authority, knowledge with attention to detail came across.

As for the security technology, I do not live in a house, meaning, there will not be a product review of the Atlas PT Ultra 4K camera.  The images are clear for an outdoor image gathering device.

What I thought could have been a mundane appointment instead was an inspiring one.

That Style in a Bowie Video

Rock superstar David Bowie wore a yellow suit in his 1983 music video single Modern Love. Everyone puts on black or brown. Only a confident man could wear this color and pull it off with such a level of finesse. After watching the concert performing video many times, this hue has been on my Style Bucket List for a long time. It’s time to cross this off the slate. With my fingers crossed for Spring 2025, I’ll be rocking like a legend.

Another One Gone

Again, the Berlin department store scene suddenly got smaller. Another big retailer is closing the doors. Galeria Kaufhaus in Alexanderplatz will go dark at the end of 2025. According to local papers, property owner Commerz Real wants to develop the property as a mixed use location of apartments and small shops for the Mitte. What the heck is going on? After years of struggling with bad management, falling foot traffic, Galeria Kaufhaus’ new owners hoped for a fresh start reviving the fortunes of the 145 year old chain. Those plans took a setback on Friday afternoon. Rumours circulated the six floor flagship brick and mortar locale was being considered for other uses. After heated negotiations, the owners decided not to renew the lease of the prominent retail outlet.

Galeria Kaufhaus in Alexanderplatz

As a frequent shopper, I am a bit sad GK is closing. The Kaufhaus sat on a transport crossroad of bus, metro, train, tram and bike. Although it is not my idea emporium, I found it easy to pop in now and again to browse or buy a gift. The houseware section offers a nice selection. Secondly, the sweets and beauty selection always have goods on special offers. Berlin’s City East will feel a bit empty in 2026.
