Being HERSELF!

Jaki Nelson is an ordinary, relaxed Angeleno.  Even if considering her school mates were Kendall and Kylie Jenner.  With dreams and talent, she set herself on a musical course.  The Billboard charting artist is currently preparing to tour to promote her new works.

Read the exclusive Black and Paper interview.

Who was your musical inspiration growing up?

I was obsessed with music from a very young age. There are so many musical inspirations, I couldn’t possibly pick just one. So here are the big three. In second grade, I used to steal the Britney Spears “In The Zone” album from my sister’s room and share my headphones with friends at school during recess. Later, I got assigned to sing a Josh Groban song for 5th grade graduation, but I learned it about four months early, so I checked out another song on the album.   I promptly memorized every single song, especially the Italian parts, with a veracity that I still yearn for every time I listen to a new song.

Then there was Lady Gaga. It blew my mind that anyone could make pop that perfect. She also hit mainstream right about the time I was starting to grapple with my sexual orientation. It was so reassuring to see an openly queer artist taking off in the public.B

Being raised around fame and music, did this encourage to become a singer?

There’s something about watching the people you know live their dreams. That helps you to intrinsically understand not only you can follow your dreams, but that you must. I see these people. I feel their energy of fulfillment. It’s infectious! You need it. I do, anyway.I

Is there one song you play over and over again?

There’s a Bea Miller song she wrote with Justin Tranter. It is unbelievable. The title is “It’s not u it’s me”. Pop perfection becuause it is surprising, confident, sexy and fun. Every songwriter I show it to loses their mind immediately. It needs radio play ASAP.

Why did you choose such a public place to come out the closet?

I wouldn’t say that I chose it. One day, I heard “Boys” by Charli XCX and I instantly felt compelled. As if by the Gods to make a bisexual remix version. It was more about the fact I wanted it to exist than about wanting even to make it. From the moment we finished, my whole life changed. I started getting asked to play it live at gay clubs. I was just immediately welcomed into the community. It was amazing! Then all of a sudden, my mom came into town and wanted to see my first big live show. I had to introduce the song, so I didn’t really have a choice. I  freaked out.  But I’m really glad I did it.

What is your definition of “Fluid Sexuality?”

Fluid sexuality is the same concept as saying you are not the same person every day. I mean technically, yes, of course. We are all the same person every day, but some days we are more or less feminine or masculine. Some days we are more bright and happy and some days we are more prone toward darkness. Neither femininity nor masculinity are inherently bad, nor is the light or the darkness. It is all part of the human experience, and it can all be perceived as beautiful. Some days I am more enticed by male energy in my life. Other days I am more attracted to female energy. My heart doesn’t discriminate.

See the Video Below

What are your tour plans?

Well, I’m headlining The Viper Room in West Hollywood. I’ll be performing  two just released singles. A few songs most people don’t know I’m featured on as lead vocal.  Some newly unheard material. These sets are an intimate preview of a tour that’s currently in the works.

Why This?

The new law from Anti Abortion Law in U.S. Southern State of Georgia is as draconian as they come. The “Fetal Heartbeat” takes the argument beyond reason to Stalin levels of criminal justice. As a person from the region I am used to the righteous zealotry. Hardworking people manipulated by furious victimhood misinformation.

Metoo

Why this law? A push back against the #metoo movement. The continued from the perceived liberalism of Obama. Or the foot off the brake in the Trump Era. Governor Brian Kemp signed into a law legislation making abortions illegal in the state or anyone traveling to have an abortion a crime. This is a man has not read a history book. Communist Russia had the same type citizen controls. The smell of fear permeates the air, social restrictions start one rule at a time. My home state could never be considered a bastion of humanistic ideas. Slavery from the past, chain gangs and the death penalty in the present course through genteel veins. Having a legislative class voting down countless bills concerning enabling social advancement, medicare, higher minimum wage come to mind, I view the sudden epiphany for life with doubt.

The state is one of the top film and tv production centers in the world with almost $3 billion spent last year. There is no economic gain from this social posture. I usually stay out of this type discussion. Abortion has been a wedge issue since Woe vs.Wade. Nearly five decades later the arguments continue. People are capable of making a monumental decision as abortion on their own. The added pressure of criminal prosecution should not hang over them.

I wonder what is next? Target the next group that does not fit into a myopic view of modern life. “Pass the law, then find the criminals”, a quote from Soviet Union.

CAMP!

The Met Gala for 2019 took place on Monday. The annual event has evolved into an A list media fashion event in New York City. This years theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” from an essay by Susan Sonntag seemed broad for interpretation. Co-Chairs Harry Styles and Lady Gaga approached the benefit from Gender and theater. Styles’ Gucci black sheer pants suits with pearl earrings. The megastar singer follows the modern trend of challenging modern notions of masculine style. Meanwhile on red carpet center stage, co hostess Gaga decided not on a single look, not enough, showed off 4 in one.

This year judging the best looks became an impossible task. The pageantry overtook the fashion aspects.

Mainstream has embraced a sub-culture. There were many reports of people asking “what is camp?” Defined as tacky, over the top, exaggerated. As a gay male that questions is easy to answer. Drag queens have been “camping it up for decades”. Television show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is a weekly homage to camp culture.

As I looked over the attendees styled, Grace Jones came to mind many, many times. Capes, dramatic entrances, headpieces, androgyny has been her style for over four decades.

Proceeds from the Met Gala benefit the Metropolitan Museum’s Met Costume Institute. It was in fun. This year all lived up to the occassion.

At Nudie Again

Recently, I took my Nudie Jeans back for a free repair, again. Part of their sustainability policy is to repair or replace of jeans if needed. Staying true to the heritage, the brand’s store is centered around a sewing machine. I bought these jeans in 2013. “Buy Better” to paraphrase Westwood. I paid 119 euros for one pair of jeans from the Scandanavian Ready to Wear label. I am not a fan of throw away clothing. There are cheaper jeans but I like purchasing pieces that last, more of an invest than buy.

Since that time they have become favorites returning them 3 times for a fast fixing. This time a worn hole in the pocket needed tending. A quick drop off at the counter, a collection number. The sales person told me to comeback in a week for pick up. It took a bit longer because the sewing machine broke down for several days.

My investment paid off over the years. I still get a return from wearing the jeans. The repair concept has been sold on my friends. They are considering buying pairs even if they cost more.

I plan on keeping these Nudie Jeans for a few more years. What happens when I cannot wear them any longer? Well, the company’s vintage jean trade in plan with a 20% discount offer for a new pair looks good.
