Highlights-Paris Fashion Week Men

Paris Fashion Week Men 2019 is all about the being a more low key this season. As I go over the collections, I notice the frivolity is out. In it is place is what men will or can wear. Accessories are also making a strong statement this season.

My Likes

For the very few who can afford to buy Hermes Menswear this collection would be well worth the price. Veronique Nichanian’s outer wear pieces were the highlights. Leather pants and suits made for a the man driving an expensive car on the Rivera. I would have to sell a kidney to afford the hoodie jacket in look #34.

Rochas has made a welcomed return to menswear with Frederio Curradi at the helm. He decided no to go over the top but in a subtle direction, with an Earthy color palette. the looks reminded one romantic continental artist complete with beret. My favorite is look #5. If you had an intellectual lover, you would want him to dress like this.

Tom Browne is one of those mad genius creative types, but not tortured. I expected different and he did not disappoint. Elongated stripes and gray looks at times felt like costumes from a 20’s decadent play. Look #18, solid pants, checkerboard blue and white coat and jacket, and sweater gave me energy.

White Mountaineering offered layers, then more layers, All was about statements, one piece or all together. The collection lived up to the mountain name, oversized protection from the elements. I did not have a favorite look because I cannot imagine myself wearing one.

Loewe entered the runway fray with its first show. At times the collection felt more conceptual than wearable but Jonathan Anderson pulled some looks and pieces out of the hat. The wide pants loose shirts, extra reach sleeves were front and center. Look #43 carried the day in my opinion. I would wear each piece as a whole or separate.

Kris Van Assche’s debut at Berluti proved to be the right shot in the arm for the brand. The opening look, a head turning brown leather suit, said, “Menswear look out”. If wear this suit one time, once would be enough.

The collection from Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton proved he is going in the right direction, more focused, fun. LVMH showed brilliance in hiring him. The flay pants were front and center of collection that moved from gray, black to print tops. Look #41, a streetwear look made up of pleated pants with white print shirt is an eye catcher.

Balmain showed 98 looks. Where to start? Olivier Rousteing had a lot to say this season. Black was the basis of the collection. Thrown in were leather, knitwear’s, and denim, all for the club life. Look #19, a black sweater with white breton stripes along with black pants would be my Friday night outfit.

I liked the Dries Van Noten collection.”Wearable” is the term that I can apply with pride. A narrow color palette enhanced the menswear line influenced by music, tailored with emphasis on the waist. Pants came in on the flare and slim side but the tops stood out.

Pitti Uomo Highlights

Florence, one of my favourite cities,  I marvel at its culture, food, and history.  Most of all, I love attending Pitti Uomo, the worlds biggest menswear tradeshow.  A place to see and be seen but also to catch the latest trends concerning mens fashion.

Stay tuned for more complete coverage

Small but GREAT

A Good Camera

As a person who is not a photographer but I take pictures at many events like fashion weeks, film festivals, and trade shows. I attended Pitti Uomo and Milan Fashion Week Men recently. Two events where I needed to make a lot of images and videos.

I wanted an SLR camera with many capabilities: external mic, able to shoot in all lighting conditions. Imagine my surprise seeing a point and shoot in the mail.

For YouTube

I got the SX740 HS point and shoot from Canon for a test. At first I was not sure if the camera would fit my needs. I wanted to send it back. To my surprise, the little image maker device worked well, easy to use, and convenient. 4K video feature is excellent, fantastic picture quality. I would say any YouTubber content producer would be happy to have this as their main production camera. It captures details. The flip 3.0” LCD screen is good for selfie lovers. I placed the camera on a tripod, then flipped up the screen for one man production.

The sound quality was my biggest concern because of the loud background noises. Normally I use an external microphone during interviews and commentaries. I made my first video commentary from Pitti Uomo using the Canon SX740 HS The sound quality was fine, good for YouTube and other social media channels.

I liked the portable aspect of the camera. I just popped the camera in and out of my jacket pocket at a moments notice. As I said, I am far from a professional photographer. My strategy for taking pictures, point a shoot, hope I get the right light and composition. I was not afraid to play with the camera control dial. I switched form one setting to another, experimenting with speed and opening.

Shooting in close quarter, I did not use the 40x optical zoom but not as much as I would have liked. I shot a few model on the runway pics without problems.

I did not use the built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features that enable connection to mobile devices. I do not carry a smartphone.

Overall

Canon has built a powerful camera in a small package. I am not just saying that. Check out other reviews as well.

MILAN FASHION WEEK MEN

Milan Fashion Week Men January 2019. The Italians do things in their own way. Sexy never goes out of style. While gender questions are being asked on other runways and presentations, not here. The looks stayed along traditional lines.

These are my first images. Please stay tuned for the full stories.

Images made with Canon SX740.  Stay Tuned for my feature on this powerful  pocket camera.

Pitti Uomo Canali

Shall I say, “Smooth Italian Operator”.  I’m  happy I attended the Canali Presentation.  The looks were based on the companies return to its DNA of casual elegance, lightweight jackets felt heavenly.  I liked the textured outerwear.  Stay Tuned for a full rewrite up.

9.99 Or Bust!

Why do we suffer for a 9.99 ticket from an airline that treats people like more like cattle than customers?  We are cheap.

I have traveled the low cast airline many times.  Now, I’m inspired to write about why I suffer but still find myself in the terminal waiting.  Stay Tuned.

London Fashion Week Men

My London Fashion Week Men impressions are so far so good. As always, even in middle of the Brexit Crisis, the city finds its creative spirit, edgy, off kilter. The weakest of the Menswear week, London has proven to be one of residence. Enlisting big names, Beckham, Dandy, and a Prince, to give lift into the big leagues with Milan and New York. As a person who is inspired by menswear I always think of London as experiementation, risk. That what makes it a great city compared to the others.

A quick review of the highlights

Kent & Curwen co-owner David Beckham should be proud. The Saville label founded in 1926 produced ties for veterans. Creative Director Daniel Kearns moved effortlessly from military to sporty. The blend of colors and prints were on this side of classic by very imaginative.

Iceberg decided to go all over with knitwear and looks based on skiwear. Prints and more prints radiating sharp colors.

Craig Green has consumed too many energy drinks. Deconstruct, over the top florescent colors that looked like packing material. The headpieces seemed a bit oriental or from a religious ceremony.

Per Gotesson has an interesting take on the modern man. Just cut it at an angle. I liked pieces more than looks from the new designer. The subdued color palette was overset by bold sexual themes.

Daniel W. Fletcher proved wearable is not dull and gender is still in style. Denim, suits, and outerwear all come together for 22 looks that feel modern.

Raeburn interwove military with utility looks and material. The 10thyear of the brand means something is going right. Not high fashion but street fashion. Masculine forms, but comfortable in the unisex category for the gender free crowd, I understand the success.

Apple Lost its Groove

A Cult

Steven Jobs became a religious like figure in the world of tech. Credited with changing the way consumers view technology. His imprint on modern culture has been written. Introducing products that changed the way humans interact with each other. With every new gadget release legions of followers waited outside in rain, sleet, snow, or sun to be the first to get their hands on what would become the “must have” device. Apple became the first $1 trillion company in value mainly because of the iPhone. The company set the standard for consumer electronics morphing from a corporation to cultural.

As a person who has covered tech the fear mixed with awe of this brand is like like seeing a lion in the wild. Any type of critique met with bewilderment or a stare of a person who is mentally handicapped. I would say “one day Apple will not be on top”, “Rome fell, so can the house Steve built.” The company was a one trick pony. The iPhone boosted 60% of the brand’s profit, a pretty dangerous act for a multi product corporation without a back up plan. Few bothered to look beyond that simple detail because like all faiths, if you examining too closely the belief does not hold up to scrutiny.

Not Always on Top

January 2019, 5 days before CES in Las Vegas, the faithful got hit back into reality. The company issued a profit warning, the first since 2002, along with a 10% stock drop. Blaming slowing sales in China, trade wars, hurricanes, snowstorms, and volcanos. A case of pride goes before the fall combined with hubris. The privilege of success comes with a downside. Tim Cook, while no Jobs, is a affable, but facts are facts, Apple has been cruising for a long time. They forgot what made people desire their products. Cook is a corporate head, Jobs was a visionary with many flaws.

How Many iPhones can they make?

Instead of innovating the iPhone, the X series just costs a lot. This shocked me. Even the marketing campaign seemed dated from 2012. Who waits out in the cold for minor upgrade? Judging by the line consisting of 5 people at the store on the first day of sales, not a lot. The Apple watch, need I say more. I considered this wearable waste of resources, an ugly design with the excitement level of buying a new refrigerator. A substandard flawed product for a brand that once made the iPod. When a products best feature is it maybe or could help you prevent a heart attack. A glorified pacemaker. Calling June Allyson! Why not call an over the hill out of work actor to peddle it like Depend Diapers for seniors?

What products are in the pipeline? So far nothing trailblazing. An Apple streaming service to compete with Netflix. Content production is a different culture from producing hardware, just ask Sony.  How did to come to this? Has Apple become a normal tech company with overpriced gadgets?

Apple can get its groove back by doing what it does best, being risky, inspiring or maybe making something other than an iPhone.
