Lust Looks Great!

If lust for a bag is wrong.  I do not want to be right.  I want the bag. 

I am a fan of the Loewe Puzzle XI Bag. Its cube shape has intrigues me from the first time I saw it. Why? When it comes to a bag there is no reason, no logic, only emotion. Emotion cannot be explained, only experienced. Not the most practical for carrying a laptop or work gear, but I do not care. A 2.300 euro bag is not a need of life, but a desire.

Loewe is not as well known as Bally, Louis Vuitton, Dior, or Gucci. The Spanish label has a rich history of producing luxury leather goods. Founded in 1846 by leather craftsman, today, the brand is headed by British designer Johnathan Anderson.

While in Paris, I visited the Loewe bag, held it. Should I buy my ultimate accessory? There is an empty space in my closet. Of course the sales person did not have a hard time convincing me how good it looked on my shoulder. I prefer the black one but the brown one stood out.

No worries about me getting my money’s worth. When I have the Puzzle XI I am taking an ancient Asian religious perpsective on my materialistic lust. I have given instructions to be cremated with the bag. If I am coming back to life in another form, this bag is returning with me in one shape or another.

Montmartre Stroll

Just walk, enjoy.

Montmartre is the romantic Parisian neighborhood on the hill with many local establishments, but what I like are the food stores. The display of goodies of all kinds are heavenly! For me, a casual stroll turns into a wonderland of food spotting, “gastronomic inspiration” through a window S’il vous plait? What is that? I want to try a bit. It looks delicious.

Even with a throng of tourist making their way up or down the streets, a rewarding time is to be had for those who love gastronomy.

Making the experience more memorable, I stopped in front of a shop window admiring the prepared delights. I was about to walk away when a patron said, “This is the best bakery in the area. Give it try.” Judging by the line in the small space I had to suppose he was right. The problem. What did I want? Hot or cold? Sweet or savory? I decided on sweet for later with coffee, strawberry pastry with whip cream and of course, some macrons. I am not sure how it happened, but,, the pastry managed to make its way back to my hotel for coffee. The delight did not disappoint. The whipped cream had melted, taking away some aesthetic points, but I enjoyed every sweet bite.

Sadly, I do not know the name of the bakery. If you are on a Rue Lepic, it is on the left side, going down, look for the Moulin Rouge at the bottom on Blvd Clichy. A flower shop and fish store are next door. There is no place to sit, as I said, it is a small, 25 meters, the establishment does not offer cafes, to my shock! Just go in and buy. If you use a credit card, the minimum is 10 euros.

Fashion Titanic

Stay calm. Take a deep breath.  

After attending Milan Fashion Week, having conversations with many industry professionals, fashion is at a major crossroads, with many questions, few answers. Attending events, drinking a glass of sparkling wine, I looked around, buyers, editors, influencers, designers, press people all in attendance, MWAH, MWAH, on the cheeks. For some reason it felt like the deck of the Titanic but there was no DiCaprioaround to save any of us. The fashion world is going through a massive shift that none understand. 

Retail

The retail sector is sinking. The temples of 20thcentury mass consumptions, department stores, have become brick and mortar dinosaurs in the online era. In the UK, Debenhams, House of Fraser have closed stores after loosing millions. High street stable John C, Lewis reported a 99% profit drop. On the other side of the Atlantic, US nameplates, Nieman Marcus cannot give it self away after years of seeking buyers. Macy’s performs like an amusement park rollercoaster, one quarterup, the next quarter down. Germany, the economicmachine of the EU, major retailers Karlstadt and Galeria Kaufhaus have merged after years of changing hands. The new Austrian owner has announced store closings. Will he use imagination to rejuvenate the ailing retailers or just lay-off his way to profitability? If it is the latter, one word: SEARS. 

Fashion Channels

What happened to fashion magazines? There was a time when they dictated taste. The stuff dreams are made of filled on their glossy paper: gorgeous models with perfect make up wearing couture, shot by top photographers in exotic locations. Who did not want to live this life? The unwritten law in fashion was labels bought ads from publications, magazines heaped coverage. An app founded in 2010 has called this relationship into question.

Fashion labels are no longer willing partners. As Instagram has risen, the power of titles like Vogue, Elle, and Harpers Bazaar have waned. Now, titles influence, HA! Not dictate. When once publications were at the top of the heap, they now have to share the mountain top with millions of influencers. Why pay a lot, when you can pay nothing? Buying an ad, paying for a polished production costing thousands was the business model,,, until Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger came up with an app. 

Today, fashion labels are employing legions of millennial influencers to show off their looks: a smartphone camera, followers, and the need for fast fame over took the industry. In the Social Media Age of rapid visual consumption,monthlyis too late to the party, secondscount. Instagram has 191 million daily users. The #fashion is one of the top trending topics. A digital platform has given millions with no fashion knowledge, influence. 

Publications with their layers of editors, writers, photographers, are the ancient out of step gatekeepers. Brands give away bags, shoes, and front row seats at fashion shows to influencers in order to reach consumers in the digital world. In my private conversations with brand media representatives, some have commented they are cutting back or eliminating buying print ads. The classic fashion channels are collapsing. Major publishing houses Conde Nast and Hearst are in a perfect storm. Staff has been reduced, titles closed. Clutch the Chanel Bag! The worst may not be over.

Streetwear

Fashion labels are embracing streetwear as the new “BLACK” to stay on top of the latest trend. As rap stars have become cultural icons, brands are keen to cash in on the style craze. The problem: Be carefulwhat you wish for. Urban culture comes from the bottom up. Fashion has been an elitist affair dictating desire to the masses for decades. The industry is trying to flip the script. Embracing a demographic that was until recently frozen out is not easy. The awkwardnessof the situation is like Angela Merkel and Beyonce singing a B-side duet. 

The Chunky Sneaker craze has infected every designer label. Plaster a designer name on an oversize trainer, sell a pair for 600 euros, instant relevance. If it sounds short sighted with a tinge of cynicism, it is easy to see why.

Conclusion


I am optimistic. Crisis means changes will come sooner or later. Fashion is a creative business that creates.  No crisis can take that away.  What will the conversations be in 2019 while sipping sparking wine? As long as I smile at the waiter pouring the bubbly, I will be ok.

Coming Soon: Visual Stunner

When I read “It” director Andy Muschietti was attached to direct a big screen version of Hajime Isayame’s “Attack on Titan”, I was curious. As a fan of anime. I knew about the Japanese comic but was not so familiar with background and story. I decided to watch a dubbed episode of the series that turned into a binge watching all 3 seasons. I watched the dubbed titled Japanese film, only once. I liked some of the visual effects.

As a movie film series I think Titan” could be the most visually striking work since “Lord of the Rings.” Bringing a media franchise like this to the screen with a big Hollywood budget could be groundbreaking. A story of mankind driven to the brink of extinction by giant malformed humanoids preying on human beings. The San Diego Comic-Con trailer session could have attendees swooning.

Eren, at times, a hyper active annoyance, is the main protagonist living in town of Shinganshina behind Wall Maria, one of three 50 meter protective barriers used for preventing titan attacks. After an attack on the wall by Armor Titan, the gate is breached, allowing entering titans to feed on the local population. Defense of the realm is entrusted to a squad of soldiers known as Survey Corps armed with swords and grappling equipment enabling them to move, almost fly, from trees, buildings, and engage titans.

If all this sounds insane, it is, the premise has a number of contemporary messages involving: environment, military, and social inequality. But like many anime, Attack on Titan suffers from the stock cut out characters which I hope the film version will avoid; The hysterical, over the top female who screeches, the know it all, but weaker sidekick, and the hyper active hero who charges into battle without thinking.

I am excited, but cautious. Americans making turning anime to the big screen does not have a great track record. “Akira” has been in development hell for decades. “Ghost in the Shell” was empty. “Speed Racer”,  anymore questions! I am in your corner Andy, waiting for the first of your two films.

The Yellow Vests, Paris

There is always a protest in Paris. Many times while I was in capital something stopped because of industrial action. Protesting is a part of the culture, a counter balance to the power structure. 

The Yellow Vest protest in Paris and throughout France is movement against a new gas tax from Macron.  I stood in the centre of it at the Concorde.  Today, the protest took a turn to the aggressive side with police using water canons on demonstrators.  

Do I agree with the movement? I think the President could use more humility and less ambition. A former banker who believes in what type of economic model.  Not so hard to figure out.  Like President Trump, Macron is learning governing is more than a slogan and an expensive haircut and make up bill.  Power is seductive but comes at a cost.  Will he have a second term?  Based on his sinking poll numbers with growing unpopularity, he is a transitional leader at best.

Christmas Season in Paris!

The Tree 

When I am in the Paris, I cannot help but go into the department store to see what the theme will be for the season.It is always a pleasure to sit at one of the cafes in Glaeries Lafayette to look up at the Christmas Decorations under the dome. I waited for the light show, every 30 minutes, to light up around the tree. It sounds a bit of pop sugar overdose, almost as bad a Marie Osmond, but I could not resist. It did not disappoint.  I was enchanted.

2019’s motif is centered around the experience of the aurora borealis. Partnering with Maison Piaget. The Christmas Tree is trimmed with gifts, watch and jewelry designs from the luxury brand.
