The Tropes for, Success?

The film American Fiction depicts a writer fed up with racial tropes. Frustrated novelist Monk writes a book with outlandish African American characters. Too his horror, the work is a bestseller. Why would I sympathise with Monk? Because I understand his bewilderment. Life is stranger than fiction.

Being a person of color in any business has challenges. Being a LGBTQ person of color adds more weight to those challenges. The pervasive thinking is the fashion world is tolerant. This is according to how “tolerant” is defined. I had a person of color colleague was approached by a major television channel to become a cast member of a reality series based on the fashion business. One catch, he had to be flamboyant or the snap his fingers, sassy, black male. That was not his character. Calling me for advice, asking what to do?

Reality shows are tricky. Good reality tv viewing is messy, a guilty pleasure of relishing bad temperament on the screen. However, a non script program can offer a lucrative brand building platform. I asked, “ Would you be comfortable playing that role?” Plus, once penciled in as the sassy stylist, there will be no escape from this persona. He replied, “NO” because that was not him. My response, “decline the offer.”. I understood my friend’s conflicted position because similar opportunities to up my brand presence came to me.

The ultimate “I made it bag”.

As a gay person of color in fashion there seems to be a role to play. Does this performance have a a place? Canned behavior comes with the territory in any field. The fashion business is about exaggeration. I look over certain LGBTQ P.O.C colleagues IG pages. I am not knocking their hustle, certainly these guys deserve respect for working hard to get where they are today. Yet, these modern mannerisms could be from a dictionary entry on prototypical sass, wearing certain clothes, unrestrained personality, while having a “hyper see me” hairstyle. Is this a new stereotype? Could this level of modern sassiness be a new form of gaining acceptance in an upperclass space, continuing to play the racial gender role written by others.

Years ago I was advised to enact the sassy characterization, not my cup of tea to play a high spirited character for greater acceptance and success. Reinforce the feel good stereotype of a black man in the creative industry with fashion buffoonery: carry a flashy accessory to show “Yes, I have cash”, such as a Hermes bag, wear borderline garish clothing, veer away from a series conversation, victimize myself to the liberal class, carry a little nose candy box to help me overcome my all emotional traumas. As I wrote, “Life is stranger than fiction”.

Informed for 2024

Press days are always an interesting moment in the fashion business. These are times when professionals and non-professionals a like trek around the city to press agencies to go over represented clients and brands in more details. For me, I am either inspired or informed. For the upcoming season, inform sat in the driver’s seat.

Amazon Fashion, ?yes?, you read it right. When I got the invitation, my expectations were not high. When I entered the apartment, I asked ?What is Amazon Fashion, Help me understand!? The mega e-commerce site has moved into selling high-end fashion. The bigger surprise was why would desired brands sell on a site known for cut rate prices for everything from books to dog collars to grey brands. The Bellevue, Washington tech giant enlisted social media influencers to appeal to Generation Z’s as an aspiring shopping destination for HUGO and Armani Exchange pieces. Well, Jeff Bezo did not earn $200 billion by making the wrong bets. But then again, who remembers Fire? The Amazon smartphone that came and went.

ANNARR in Copenhagen

The second bit of information I was told, Danish corporation Bestseller is introducing a new menswear label aimed at affluent customers. Annarr means ?the next one? in the Norse language. A curious venture for Bestseller, whose subsidiaries include fast fashion staple Jack&;Jones, it means a gamble if clientele want a buying less but better quality. Four collections per year, carefully curated with looks influenced by Copenhagen casual style with a promise of layering abilities. Annarr arrives in stores in Spring 2024.

In the shock and surprise category, G-Star Raw has a 1,200 euro jacket. Normally, one does not associate a luxury price with a known streetwear brand, but as different segments of the fashion market converge in other categories such as trainers and t-shirts, the Dutch label has made a play in the luxury category.

Truffaut/Hitchcock

I read Hitchcock/Truffaut while studying cinema in University. To say this conversation of two had an impact would be an understatement. Francois Truffaut gets to the heart of the filmmaking from director Alfred Hitchcock. For all cinephiles, this 1985 publication is a film reference must.

A Trendy Little Street in CPH

Jaegerborggade, there is a name not easy on the tongue. The Copenhagen street located in Norrebro area of the Danish capital, at first did not strike a visitor as trendy. While looking for the sign I missed it completely, walking two full blocks before asking a person for directions. Jaegerborggade is a narrow residential thoroughfare lined with independent shops, cafes and bars. Talking to the locals, there is a real sense of community. Unlike generic shopping malls with their endless, at times numbing sameness, the stores offer original, unique pieces for shoppers that move from hat designs, jewel smiths and even bakeries making caramel treats. A good time to visit is doing one of the many open street fair events.

Quiet As It Goes

Monograms are out. Quiet and soft are in. Fall 2023 has arrived, the looks for the up coming season focuses on not being a walking fashion brand billboard. The exact time of this style transformation escapes me but be warned, having BALENCIAGA on your chest is déclassé.

A Fall 23 Quiet Luxury Look From Designer Brett Johnson

Menswear returned to a more classical approach. Gender fluidity trended on the catwalk, but sales became another matter. Guys are retreating to what they wear best. As Gucci and other disciples of showing it off looked for creative heads, the under the radar quiet brands have hit the mark with shoppers.

Rumours and Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone arrived in my mailbox when I was in college. The magazine cover featured the latest, hippest artists under the banner, always with a catchy headline and the best photography. Founded in 1967 by Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason the square publication spoke to generations of music lovers.

However, I did note the lack of Black Artists on the cover was not lost on me. In some ways Rolling Stone, while projecting its forwardness was in a way a product of its segregated times with all the baggage. There were always rumours of the New York based publication‘s prejudices, African American artists not getting featured or interviews. Their frequent Greatest Lists felt weighted in certain biases.

Magazines are not about objectivity, but about their readers. The average RS subscriber was white male, educated.

“I’m always annoyed about why black people have to bear the brunt of everybody else’s contempt,,” Toni Morris.

Imagine American Music without Black People! Who invented Rock N Roll? Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Rosetta Tharpe are credited as founders of the genre that would be the basis for Mr. Wenner’s success. Rolling Stone is a title of a Muddy Waters’s song.

As a person gets older, the truth becomes aanchor, true feelings are revealed. During a recent podcast to promote his book, Mr. Jenner (77) admitted his feelings about African Americans artists not being articulate enough to consider them masters alongside white male counterparts U2, John Lennon, Jerry Garcia. In his defense, The co-founder included Joni Mitchell on his inarticulate list. With a liberal like this, who needs a conservative.

Jann has been removed from The Rock and Roll Hall of fame board. Well, at least he will keep his fortune from covering music created by People of Color.
