Giants Can Fall

Once upon a time Kodak was one the largest companies in the world.  Digital cameras hit the market.  General Motors controlled 60% of the US auto market.  The Corolla came along.  Nokia sat on almost 40% of global mobile phone sales.  iPhone was released. AOL had 30 million users in 2000, by far the largest in the world. Customers switched to broadband. MySpace was the social media site. Suddenly young people moved to Facebook. These giants fell, some faster than others.   They were unable to adapt to changing times.  As the shockwaves continue to pulsate throughout the global tech sector. Could this David slay the giants? That is the question.

Brazen

DeepSeek, the Chinese start-up founded in 2023 scaled the walls of success to become a conversation.  AI was supposed to be the terrain of the giants, not anymore.  A brazen newcomer crashed the scene.  Even President Trump weighed in saying “It’s a wake-up call.”   A new competitor arrived, one that cannot be bought or suppressed.

MySpace

Not only did DeepSeek beat the US giants, the young Hangzhou young upstart did it cheaper and faster than expected.  While Silicon Valley sat back raking in investment for the AI, High-Flyer, DeepSeek’s parent company, outflanked the Goliaths.  In one day, tech stocks dropped $1 trillion in value.  Maybe Wall Street knew had a premonition of what is coming.  In the past it took years for companies to fall from the top.  For the hyper connected age where change comes fast, within twenty months a once household brand could be regulated to the graveyard, then forgotten. Technology is an unforgiving field that moves forward, stomping over stumblers.

For the first time, The United States tech platforms must change to a catch up plan in a field they dominate.  A nightmare could become a reality, a decline to irrelevancy.  So significant is the threat, Fortune Magazine reported Meta head Mark Zuckerberg has convened a war room to counter DeepSeek’s new Chatbot.

The well-known expression from the Chinese philosophy Taoism:  What goes up, must come down.  These words are resonating in Silicon Valley.

The Low Price Allure Wins

That orange bag is ubiquitous. The most downloaded app in 2024 was the low priced Chinese shopping platform TEMU. The low priced products have proven a success with buyers in uncertain times. This past October the Shanghai giant recorded 52 million downloads in the US. Offering everything from fast fashion bags to cutlery, Temu has lured customers away from rivals Shein and Amazon with its cut throat pricing and marketing to young customers.

Back to the Camera

After using mobile phone cameras for coverage, the decision has been made to go back to using a photographic camera. Do not get it wrong, phone cameras are convenient, handy but the disadvantages are numerous. Foremost, the battery life is limited.  After a few hours of producing pictures and videos, suddenly one bar on the screen.  Additionally, mobile phone batteries have to be replaced.

Secondly, the numerous creative options on photography cameras are expansive. The presets there are many image techniques for a shoot and in post-production. Plus, the images are just sharper.  For a lowlight fashion show, cameras have more optimal settings.

Inspired Diversity

Inspiration comes when it wants.  One never knows when.   At IFA 2024 while attending a press conference for a what I thought would be a presentation of a security light, hardly high value glamor at a big technology show, I did a double take.  The presenter was a Black Guy.  Usually, at these get togethers an Asian or White man takes the stage.  The technology industry is as diverse as a Southern American University Fraternity.   Yes, tech management believes in the principle of the ideal, but not the implementation

Fabrice Kalhoun presenting a Security Camera

Reolink is a Chinese security Camera technology brand based in Shenzhen.  When I got the press invite for a product unveiling my first instinct was to pass.  Home security is not my tech topic. But, after positive engagement with the public relations representative, I scheduled an attendance.  During my many years of covering product unveilings at gadget trade fairs, I cannot remember one presiding over by a person of color.  Normally, the speakers are Asian or White.  This time Reolink gave the microphone to Mr. Fabrice Kalhoun, a Person of Color.  The African born engineer gave an enthusiastic presentation of the new home security camera he designed.   During our post presentation talk, Fabrice told me his story of studying in China. While in graduate school, Reolink recruited the engineer him out of university to become a part of the company’s team.

I called him “a tech unicorn” in modern reality. Normally, an African man front and center of an Asian company is a politically correct advertisement showing the brand is part of the DEI trend.  Not in this case, Fabrice’s authority, knowledge with attention to detail came across.

As for the security technology, I do not live in a house, meaning, there will not be a product review of the Atlas PT Ultra 4K camera.  The images are clear for an outdoor image gathering device.

What I thought could have been a mundane appointment instead was an inspiring one.

Gaming Arts Goes AI

At the Acer Computer presentation, the Taiwan company showed an intriguing new AI based technology for gaming.  Winking Studios, an art source gaming development company that enables users to create 2D and 3D works for platforms.  The big question is: Can this technology go beyond gaming?

An exclusive interview with the head Winking Studios’ AI head Rita Liu.

Winking, what is the background of the company?

Winking Studios was established in 2003. With over 20 years of game development and art outsourcing experience, Winking Studios has over 800 employees through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Suzhou. Our expertise includes art outsourcing and full project development, across PC, Mobile, Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5.

Our partnership with the top companies in the business allows us to perfect our craft to the finest. We continue to deliver the most exceptional work for our partners around the globe, such as Activision Blizzard, EA, Bungie, Ubisoft, Riot Games, SQUARE ENIX, NCSoft, NEXON. Over the years, Winking Studios has been part of many great projects, including Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Destiny 2, Skull & Bones, Lineage 2M, Genshin Impact, Final Fantasy XIV, Blade & Soul 2, and Onmyoji.

In 2023, Winking Studios launched its AI Research Lab. We introduced GenMotion.AI, its first AI tool created to support and empower animation professionals in producing high-quality content.

Do you see Winking as a disruptive technology?

Our approach to this AI tool is different, with the focus not solely on AI itself. We designed GenMotion.AI to boost animators’ productivity, with AI technology simply helping us reach that goal. We know that no innovation changes things overnight; only tools that integrate seamlessly into existing workflows are truly practical. This tool is set to revolutionize the art production process—not by disrupting it, but by enhancing it.

Beyond Gaming

How could this tech go beyond gaming?

Currently, our tool is designed for animation professionals, providing advanced editing options to fine-tune their work. We plan to expand its accessibility to anyone wanting to express their creativity. We will offer intuitive options to help bring their ideas to life.

Is there a certain skill needed to use Winking?

You’ll need to enter a prompt, and currently, since the tool is designed for animation professionals, some skill is needed to apply the animation to a 3D model within 3D software or game engines. However, we plan to make GenMotion.AI accessible to users without specialized skills in the near future, offering them the same quality we provide to professionals.

How would the average person use Winking Art Modeling?

Our future updates will expand the tool’s accessibility to both seasoned professionals and amateur creators. Users will be able to choose from a variety of 3D models, using an intuitive interface that simplifies animation generation, making it easier than ever to bring their creative visions to life.

Connected at Digital X

Digital X in Cologne, the digitalization event started by German Telekom hits the mark for technology gatherings.  On September 18th and 19th, brands, experts and press discuss topics concerning: cybersecurity, sustainability, connected business and future of work.

The fifty thousand attendees moved from one staging area to another talking to individuals and teams concerning the future of digital interaction.

I found it a bit contradictory, the topic of Connected Business as many technology companies are requiring return to offices. Since the Covid Lockdowns, Virtual, Augmented and Immersive Reality devices and gadgets have advance rapidly.  Apple’s Vision Pro, Meta’s Quest and Microsoft’s HoloLens are being promoted as the next generation of tech headsets.

The Huawei IdeaHub ES2 introduced me to the Bring Your Own Meeting (BYOM) term.  The hardware is compatible with Zoom and Microsoft Teams platforms for distanced collaborations.  The smart whiteboard, camera and speaker/voice incorporate Z-Tech technology.  The applications for this technology go beyond corporate office usage.  The educational potential is boundless. Higher learning is about to get disrupted. Schools and universities could use the entire hardware system and platforms digital classes, eliminated the need for physical classes.  Students log in to a session with an instructor and can download the lecture via a QR code.

IBM and fashion on display at Digital X

Curiously, giant IBM offered a fashion and tech melody.  The US company works with clothing brands an AI profile matrix for brands to better understand customer needs and purchasing habits.  Given the poor financial health of online sales platforms, maybe this could help, but I have a few doubts.

I would like to write better about start-ups area in Cologne; however, Germany is still a country trying to embrace the business trend while trying to stay in the risk adverse box. Originality requires going out on a limb.  Many of the ideas at the different booths seemed more safe copies of tried concepts.

Schedule Digital X on your tech calendar for 2025, this get together is well worth the time.
