Fashion Expedition

Shopping for a bargain is always an adventure.  I call these outings “Fashion Expeditions”.  My latest expedition took me to the Ingolstadt Village in the south of German, located in this center are over 130 stores from many top designers and brands. The center is architectural fairytale kitsch painted in soft pastel colors designed with a simple one trail layout of stores on both sides.   Europeans may find it a bit plastic but being an American, I felt at home.

When shopping for bargains or at outlet centers it is important to do a bit of research.  Check prices at local sales outlets then make a plan.  Buying the first thing you see is not what I recommend, explore first to see what is on offer.  I usually go from store to store for a first round venture to check out what store  has what.   For me, 50% off the retail price is minimal incentive to shop at an outlet center because they are usually outside city centers, meaning the savings have to be worth the travel.

My Store Experiences:

Ralph Lauren Price Tag

Ralph Lauren– This store had a large selection of men’s and women’s fashion..  Were the prices good? On some items, yes, I bought t-shirts and underwear. The prices were comparable to TK Maxx but with many fashion choices from the designer label, a shopper could not go wrong.  The customer service was excellent. I spent 72 euros.

Bally-The Swiss luxury brand outlet store had great discounts up to 70% off, but sadly for me, nothing in my shoe size. I really wanted a pair of leather trainers at 75 euros in blue or black.

Tod’s-I was hypnotized in the Italian luxury shoe wear brand’s store.  Blue leather hi top trainers or round toe suede ankle boots 70% off.  I decided on the round boots, classic style for only 125 euros but there was a bit of remorse about leaving the hi-tops.

Trussardi Jeans-This brand’s menswear collections was on hit for sweaters and jackets.  A button down wool sweater and slim cut pants were on my menu at 70%.  The fit was perfect. The sales staff was very patient to say the least. How many sweaters did I try on? A LOT! I am sure I drove the sales  people to the nearest bar at quitting time.

Sunglasses-I wandered into this small store on the corner by accident, a nice selection of brands and styles.  The sales lady was welcoming telling me the store had a reduction on many designer frames.  I ended up buying a pair of Marc Jacobs sunglasses for a steal at 65%.

Gant-A spacious store divided by one side for womenswear, the other for menswear.  The premium brand had many items at deep discounts.  I was looking for a gift.   I found the perfect outerwear in the form of a 100% wool poncho at 80% off.

Gucci Jacket

Gucci-The top luxury brand retained its status even at a discount.  The boutique was first class all the way from service to clothing on hand, temptation on every shelf.   I wanted a bag. I saw a jacket all at a major discount.  I had to walk away on blow my budget.  When a person says, “GUCCI AT A BIG DISCOUNT”   it is hard to walk away without feeling shaken.

A very productive shopping outing at the Ingolstadt Village, my fashion needs were met without breaking my wallet.  If you are planning a “Fashion Expedition” in Europe put Ingolstadt Village on your list.

L’Homme Couture 2

Part 2 of the Black and Paper interview with photographer Brice Hardelin on his exhibition L’Homme Couture: A Photographic Odyssey.

Brice and I had a good time talking about his work over a glass of white wine. His career is going forward in many directions. He had just completed a well received  male firemen calendar. He gave me a tour of his collection displayed on the wall of the hotel before continuing our interview.

How did the W Hotel in Paris become involved in this project?

My agent called to ask if I wanted to be a part of Paris Artist. It is an association of 150 artists in the city.   The Paris Artist asked if I wanted to exhibit at the hotel.  I organized a meeting. I liked the style of the W.  It is young, dynamic.  When the association asked the hotel who they wanted, the team chose me.  I know my pictures are provocative but the W Hotel was supportive of my work. There was no censorship.

What do you think of the artistic state of the world?

There are lots of things.  It is too Politically Correct.   It is more and more commercial and boring.  .  If you look at the big fashion magazines there are only places for big names and ads.  There is no space for new people. And for the big brands would stay away from images like these on the wall in front of you.  For them it is going too far. For me it is not far enough.

Is there a lack of freedom?

No! None! There is no freedom at all because they want the same pictures for their clients.  I have nothing against it because they have beautiful products but when you are a person with a different vision who likes to mix things like an African Mask with a Cartier Necklace no magazine  would publish it.

What do you think Instagram Photographers who are no considered professionals?

I understand the platform but I have a problem with the business they are doing because they are making people think they are famous.   For me they are holiday, vacation pictures.  It is nothing! (Laughing)  It is reality television. On Instagram everyone wants to know what you are doing for lunch but no one really cares.  A person sitting on the toilet then the viewer goes to another image of another person sitting on the toilet! MEANINGLESS!   What is the purpose of having 50.000 followers and none of them can buy the product!   I use it of course like everyone else.

I am an old fashion photographer. I like prints Internet in a way is the death of photography.  I  No one wants real pictures.  They want one picture after another, quantity over quality.

What is your next project?

The exhibition runs until January. I have an exhibition in Belgium, then, I am looking for an editor for a book of my work.  I have editorials but I am thinking about a shoot in Africa.

L’Homme Couture is on display at the W Hotel  Paris until January 3rd 2018.

Black and Paper Christmas List 2016 Travel

It was not easy choosing a destination this Christmas Season.  There were so many factors regarding the decision, ranging from safety to geopolitics to experiencing the new and undiscovered or the adventure.

Tel Aviv, Israel and Colombia stood out because each one possesses so many unique qualities that reward a traveler.  I know, one is a city in the Middle and the other is a country in South America.   What they had in common is: Expectation.   What would a traveler find in these locations?  As a seasoned traveler when I think of these places I am not sure what to expect: A liberal oasis in the Middle East, the other a vast country  in the process of healing after years of multiple destructive conflicts.

A metropolis that offers so much, Tel Aviv seems to go by the beat of its own music.   Regardless of what happens around it, this is a city with vitality for life, I would describe it as vivacious.  Beach life, cultural, LBGT, and music festivals are only some of myriad of options.  An “enjoy today” confidence and attitude that radiates in all directions.

An exotic destination ready for those willing to be rewarded with an adventure of a lifetime, Colombia, after decades of civil war and the War on Drugs one would think this country is not ready to be explored; I think it is the opposite.  With peace at hand, this South American country has a lot offer: cultural diversity, miles and miles of tranquil coastal beaches, islands, and mountain and jungle terrains all authentic not spoiled by mass tourism.

Getting the Chic Back Part 2

In part 2 of our interview with Alitalia Customer Care Head we learned the airline’s definitions of hospitality and customer care.

Do you think people are tiring of being treated like non-customers on airlines?

Alitalia is transforming its guest travel experience embodying a concept of Italian hospitality, thanks to a combination of new service enhancements and an accelerated programme of cultural and operational change at every level within the airline. To date, over 8,000 Alitalia cabin crew and front line airport teams have completed Customer Excellence training workshops dedicated to service excellence, image, style, and in-flight dining service inspired by the world’s best restaurants. On the ground and in the air, Alitalia is empowering its customer-facing staff, placing them at the heart of this transformation process and the response from our guests is extremely positive

What is the definition of hospitable to you?

Hospitality for us is a warm welcome with attention to details which makes our guests from all over the world feel as they were in a typical Italian home. We aim to become the best airline in Europe, and to achieve this we must ensure excellent hospitality and service for our passengers before, during and after their flights. Our new airport lounges “Casa Alitalia” perfectly reflect our idea of hospitality: an environment that combines emotion with efficiency.

In the age of discount airlines why choose Alitalia to fly to Rome or Milan?

Alitalia represents the best Italy has to offer. Our guests will feel a sense of Italy upon boarding the airline’s newly designed planes, equipped with exclusive ‘Made in Italy’ amenities, products and services for customers. Business Class passengers can relax in luxurious Italian-brand Poltrona Frau Leather seats that recline fully to a comfortable flatbed position and enjoy award-winning onboard dining featuring the best of Italian regional food and wine. Alitalia’s new ‘dine anytime’ meal service allows customers to decide when they prefer to eat on board. All classes of travel – business, premium economy and economy – feature newly renovated cabins. We are showing our customers that Alitalia stands for great service and our product and punctuality have changed to best-in-class.

As for the connection opportunities, from Alitalia’s hub at Rome Alitalia passengers can connect to 24 cities in Italy and 53 cities in the rest of the world, including Europe, Middle East, the Americas, Cuba, Far East and North Africa.

Furthermore, the flights departing from Rome and from Milan allow our passengers to reach not only the United Arab Emirates, but continue, thanks to our partner Etihad Airways’ extensive global connections, to many destinations in the Middle East, Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, Asia and Australia

Is it true you sent a newlywed couple a bottle of Champagne because of lost luggage?

Yes, it is. Recently we’ve made a surprise to two guests in honeymoon by delivering them a gift at their arrival in Naples, as a special care to improve their experience. Their response was extremely positive.

Where do you like to travel to relax?

New York is my favorite city in the world as there is just so much choice and you can never get bored from great hotels, culinary delights, theatre, shopping but most of all just walking around exploring. Living in Italy now for 18 months, my second favorite is “Italy”: it has everything to offer and choice from great locations in the South on the Mediterranean but especially the mountains of Tuscany and Umbria whereby the silence is just perfect, the fresh air, the calming surroundings and its lake getting back to basics by experiencing the olive harvest, the truffle hunting, the exquisite vineyards. The peace and quiet for me is a luxury.

A Hospital of a Different Kind

The ancient tradition of Falcon care is alive and well in Abu Dhabi.  While in the Emirate, I visited a unique place, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital.  The largest falcon center in the world was founded in 1999.  As well as caring for avian patients, the facility offers a complete package of avian services from boarding, breeding, molting.  I must say I learned quite a bit of birds and the passion their owners have these majestic creatures; many birds have their own rooms and even passports for travel. The value of the birds can range to up over $100.

A visit is well worth it.  Kids will love it!
