Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Experience

I traveled to Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways for the Formula 1 Auto race.  From the moment I got the plane I knew this was going to be an experience of a lifetime.

Getting was half the fun.  Exceptional Service is an integral part of the Etihad precinct.   I was greeted by a friendly smile boarding the plane that directed to my Business Class Seat. The smile was special but for all travelers.  Business Class on Etihad’s A330’s use subtle colors with upholstered and leather fabrics.   The interior is based on relaxing complete with a starry ceiling.

I was situated in the middle aisle with plenty of leg room.  The stewardess offered a glass of Champagne up my seating, PERFECT!   After a smooth take off towards Abu Dhabi I was served a complete 3 course meal. My remaining time on the flight was spent watching a feature film from the inflight selection, then a brief nap before breakfast.

Landing at the bustling Abu Dhabi International Airport I was impressed by the construction cranes for the new terminal. After going through passport control I enjoyed a fresh orange juice in the premium class lounge quipped with a shower, barber and other services.

Formula 1 Abu Dhabi is a world famous event with the top racing teams competing for the trophy.  Thrilling, exciting, adrenaline pumping are words I would use to describe the race.   There is no better place to have watch Formula 1 than the YAS Marina, a playground for the well to do viewing the race from their Yachts with endless streams of music flowing and Champagne refills.  It was all on the over the top fun side whether it was dancing girls or DJ battles competing to see who would out do the other.

Congratulations to Nico Rosberg from Team Mercedes for winning the Formula 1 Cup.

A Time in Tunisia Part 1

Ancient. Fascinating. Vibrant. Charming.  Tunisia is a gem as a travel destination, a country that has had many lives since antiquity.   I spent 8 days combining walks on sunning beaches then I had a day in the cosmopolitan capital city, Tunis. For bargain hunters there are many offers hotel and flights included, for the independent adventurer there is something on offer all budgets.  On this occasion there was a really affordable all-inclusive package offered online so I took a chance.  It was well worth it.  I plan on going back to explore more.

Fuana

A Mediterranean climate, Tunisia does not really have bad weather, although showers and clouds can be expected in the winter months, the average temperature while I was there in November was 18 degrees, peaking at 27.   I managed to swim a few times over the week, the water was refreshing.

Beach

It was not challenging getting around; taxis, mini bus, and trains were reliable and readily available for short and long distance journeys.

Tunis

There is a security alert for the country, travelers should be vigilant, but I did not have a problem or felt a threat.  Tunisians are hospitable and welcome tourists with open arms.   I recommend Tunisia.

Doors

Tunisia Part 2 coming soon.

The Color Line

While in Paris for Fashion Week I had a chance to see a moving exhibition on the African American experience at the Musee du Quai Branly.  In these times of uncertainty it reminds a person of how far a country has come and  needs to go concerning race relations.

Getting the Chic Back

Part 1 of the Black and Paper Feature

The Glamorous spirit of Italy is being recaptured by Alitalia.   The flagship carriers renaissance begins with  the style and chic looks of new crew uniforms.

Why the new uniforms after so many years?

Renovating a company must include the renewal of its image. And what is more distinctive for an airline than its uniform? This is especially true for Alitalia, which globally represents Italy, something that throughout the world is synonymous with style and timeless elegance.

Our aim was to create a new look of our people which would capture the spirit of Alitalia today as it continues on its journey of renewal and growth. Our new stylish collection of uniforms emulates the beauty of Italy and represents Italian excellence around the world. We want our customers to experience the best of Italy in everything that we do, and there is no better way of highlighting our desire than with new uniforms.

Who is the designer of the new looks?

The new Alitalia Collection was created by Italian haute couturier designer Ettore Bilotta.  All of his creation matches the best of Italian tailoring tradition and the luxury textiles highlighting the purely formal linearity characterizing its design. He studied at IED in Rome. He started his career in high-fashion with Radiosa, a bridal fashion house then moved to fashion house Lella Curiel. In the mid-1990s he collaborated with the iconic Italian label Lancetti.  After this he worked he designed Etihad Airways in 2003.

Alitalia’s brief to the designer was to create a new style which would be timeless and enduring, by using classic Italian elements combined with everyday practicality for both male and female Alitalia team. Bilotta used red to symbolize Italian passion, and green to represent the best of Italy, its countryside, and the richness of its culture and history.  The female cabin crew uniforms are a burgundy that slowly changes to a lighter red. This effect was achieved by using a chevron print design. For the female ground crew, a charcoal grey gradually changing to green was also realized using the same print design. This design process is utilized on each garment, including a white blouse featuring tapering chevron print columns in red for cabin crew and green for ground crew.

All female crew members receive three options: a one piece dress, a two piece jacket and skirt and a trouser option, including shirt and cardigan. As for the accessories, they receive high or low heel shoes, overcoat, foulard, winter scarf, belt, stockings, handbag, hat, gloves, make up kits and bag with buttons.

All male crew members receive a collection composed by jacket, shirt, tie, waistcoat (for male cabin crew and male airport lounges team) or pullover (for male ground team), pochette, trousers, belt, gloves, handbag, shoes, overcoat, winter scarf, bags with buttons and make up kits for male.

Why the La Dolce Vita references of Chic?

The collection takes inspiration from the glamorous Golden Days of Italian fashion in the 1950s and 1960s – when women always were very elegant, wearing beautiful hats and gloves – and Italy’s rich heritage, culture and national identity. To represent the essence of Italy in the new collection, the designer studied Italian architecture, monuments, and everyday lifestyles but elected to draw inspiration from the country’s landscapes, eventually focusing on the terraces of Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera. These terraces were the inspiration for the hat design.

The new uniform also celebrates the people of Alitalia, their professionalism, style and passion for the airline.

Even the accessories are unusual and distinctive. The bags of the female uniforms are elegant and refined. For cabin crew are in wood green, and for ground staff are in burgundy such as all the leather accessories. The shoes worn by the personnel are handmade in the historic workshops of the Marche. The gloves that accompany the new Alitalia uniforms come from the heart of Naples, famous throughout the world for its tradition of leather craftsmanship.

For accessory lovers, tell us about the new crew bags and other details.

The bags for the male uniform and other accessories are more formal, from the shoes to the waistcoats, cardigans, scarves and overcoat that showcase the typical Italian male elegance. The design on the pouchette and on the ties are perfectly balance the uniform using modern Italian contemporary and classic design elements to create items which are in vogue.

Both the foulards of the female uniform and the ties for male are made from the finest silk selected from the best supplier in Como.

Part 2 of this article will be on line soon.

Surf’s Up

The Baltic Coast of Germany is known for the historic trade of the Hansa League, a federation of shipping states that controlled commerce from Russia to England, historical references are everywhere.

However, the past is not the only thing on offer in the region, if you are searching for something more modern, sexy, and active like a bit of surfing this is the place. Kitsurfing is a popular recreation because of the strong wind conditions with young and old hitting the surf in the afternoons.  These guys and ladies move over the water at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour.

Many schools, rental shops, and clubs dot the coastline.

Magical Dahab

Magical Dahab

A Hippie hangout in the 1970’s Dahab, Egypt is a small Bedouin fishing village located on the western side of the Sinai Peninsula of the Red Sea Coast.   A laid-back paradise for individual travelers especially compared to the other mass tourist destination in the area. If experience travel is your inspiration let Dahab be your first choice. There is a wide range of activities including: Free Diving, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Windsurfing, and Mountain Excursions, Horseback and Camel Riding or just sit and relax on the golden beach at the lagoon.

There is no need to struggle for food in Dahab with plentiful choices but my favorites are Ali and his delicious Koshary, just look for the his small blue cart on the promenade or try the Blue House for Thai food or the Dai Pescatori for Italian, i recommend the Napoli Pizza.

Situated by the sea the Coral Coast Hotel offers affordable accommodation with single and double rooms, breakfast is included.

Scuba Diving

As a Scuba Diving instructor I return to Dahab year after year for the adventure because there are limitless offers.  There are a number of diving sights for every level of diving experience from beginning to the most experienced with the famous Blue Hole.   Diving is easy because just fringing most of the beach is a tropical reef with its explosion of undersea life.  In stark contrast to the tranquility of the Sinai dessert above, the water world is teaming with aquatic creatures of all sizes from the sublime to the colorful. (See video below)

I recommend the Lighthouse on the beach as a first point of entry for beginners and novices.  This location offers ideal conditions and high visibility.   A second dive sight is accessible by taxi to the Islands (my favorite). This spot is a spectacular coral maze. To keep it that way I recommend this for the more experienced diver.  To get to the Blue Hole take a taxi but for me the site is not more interesting than the coral but it is deep at around 100 meters.

After a dive, head for a well-deserved beer at Blue Beach Bar.

You have been warned, going to Dahab is addictive.  You will return time and time again.

The author of this story is a Dahab enthusiast and an Open Water Scuba Diving Instructor with over 800 dives.  His last visit was in April 2016.

W Hotel Opera in Paris Conversation with Insider Johanna

If you need to be in the know while visiting Paris there is no better person to ask than Johanna from the W Hotel.  After hours shopping,  dinner on a roof top with a view of the city, or a private garden tour, she will make it happen.

Johanna W Insider Paris Opera

Johanna W Hotel Insider

What makes Paris a special city?

Paris is the most beautiful city in the world. Everybody wants to come to Paris to discover its special atmosphere. There is always something to do, to see, to discover, it does not matter the season. I love all the cliché things that make Paris on the most visited cities in the world. The old bistros, the small cobbled streets making you feel like you are in a village, the fresh markets, and the different architectural styles. And of course Paris is the fashion capital. The way people dress.   A person can never get enough of this city.

Can you name your favorite eating spot?

I am wine lover, so Les Climats. It is a French restaurant established in an old house built by a woman who worked in a post office in Paris. I love the décor, the service and food. They only have wine from Burgundy.   Les Climats just got a Michelin Star but it is still affordable.

The W Hotel has Coquette, a good place to have lunch or dinner in a friendly way.   The whole menu is made in a health way. I really love the veggie burger with its pumpkin seeds bun and its mushroom steak. All the desserts are wonderful too!

Why do guests like the W hotel in Paris?

who3487cl-148154-W Lounge

Guests come here because they like the design and atmosphere. We are in a historical building so we mixed the modern with the classic. As well, we are in central Paris, next to the famous department stores and across from the Opera House. The views from the rooms are great!
The hotel makes every guest feel like they are home. We have a Whenever/Where ever team. It means you ask for whatever you want, whenever you want and we will do our best to get it or arrange it.

Describe the shopping experience?

It depends on what the guest is looking for it. If we have a client who is an absolute fan of shoes I can provide exclusive access to the Louboutin store. The guest will have VIP access, a private room, a stylist to help with all they want.

What would you do if you were a tourist in Paris?

I would visit the Opera Garnier, a great monument. I would explore. There are many hidden gardens, roof tops, passages, and ornate door entrances.

The W Hotel is located in the center of Paris across from the Opera.
