Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week 2016 is having an embarrassment of riches this season with so many great collections along with many looks.

Favorites:

Versace showed restraint yet this was a great collection from Donatella, a mixture of the brand DNA  mixing with day wear looks..

Ermanno Scervino went for the sleek feminine silhouette of soft fabrics.

Emporio Armani filled the collection with jackets and cropped shirts.

Sportmax was assured with a 60’s shapes and color spectrum.

Costume National was a unified collection filled with black and white.

Moschino was inspired by Chanel but in a playful way.

Prada went with strong leather power suits with short hemlines.

Gucci gave the world a new meaning for Granny Chic.

Bally gets a special mention for pants suits along with many other rich looks.

Philipp Plein continues to evolve to become the new Rock Star Designer with studded, shiny looks.

Iceberg’s Dr. Suess inspired looks were fantastic for those looking for something a bit on the edge but no over the cliff.

Les Copains collection felt inspired by Asia with belts and knitwear.

Antonio Marras gave his collections a touch of  dark sparkle with strong prints, full dresses, and lush silk.

Giorgio Armani turned to red and walking shorts with tailored jackets.

Dolce & Gabbana paid tribute to Italian summers and holidays gone by with graphic prints inspired from the past.

Salvatore Ferragamo  was soft with leather, frocks,  and strapless looks.

Aquilano Rimondi displayed mini skirts and minimalism.

Behind the Scenes @ Dimitri Fashion Show in Berlin

Behind the glamour of a runway show there are teams of artists hard at work putting it all together.

We managed to get behind the scenes at Dimitri Show during Fashion Week in Berlin.  Seeing models, hair stylists, make up artists, dressers, and stylists at work making it all happen before the ladies hit the runway.

Make up team from Maybelline

Hair team from L’Oreal Professional

London Fashion Week

Collections we liked from London Fashion Week

Felder Felder looks were shiny then moved on short skirts with prints.

Gareth Pugh went for red  then moved to black this season with a collection that was fun if not a bit over the top.

Burberry Prorsum moved into the future with cut outs, mini dresses, and the signature dress coat and laces. The collection lived up the hype.

KTZ went super tribal and sexy but if you take away the over sized ear and nose rings the looks were sleek.

Osman with gaucho inspired looks complete with hats.

David Koma went with hemlines above the knee along with folded strips around the body.

Marques ‘Almeida was daring with ruffles and tearing apart pieces for a complete look.

Toga had a complex collection with many details.

Christopher Kane gets a mention for the neon colors and shapes.

My overall impression of London Fashion Week was a bit underwhelming.  There were many great looks and good collections but the spark was missing this season.

New York Fashion Week

Tis the season of the Big 4 Fashion Weeks starting with New York.

The collections I liked so far:

Lacoste was a surprise by going for something completely different. The crocodile disappeared in favor exciting colored prints.

Alexander Wang paid homage to the 60’s Hippie Culture of California.

Herve Leger mixed mini dresses with pants that hugged the body. The attitude of the looks was “if you want to be sexy, be sexy.”

Cushnie et Ochs veered toward the 90’s with some looks that would have been at home on BET Videos.

Yes, the Givenchy collection was sensual in black and white with direct influences to ladies slips and bedroom wear. I liked it but the hype surrounding the show the NYC made it hard to give an honest opinion.

Ralph Lauren was dependable, wearable moving from colors to western slim gaucho bottoms.

Victoria Beckham kept it simple but rich.

I liked some Prabal Gurung’s Nepal inspired looks especially the off the shoulder ones but the prints were equally intriguing.

Edun’s collection had an Art-Deco feel to it with vibrant colors.

Rag and Bone went with jackets, parkas, and sweater points with ankle lengths.

Reem Acra decided on the exotic with vivid colors teamed with short hemlines then moved to floor length knockout gowns.

Tommy Hilfiger island looks were classic fun.

Greg Lauren using denim cowgirl motifs with hats made for a sexy collection.

Jason Wu is moving in a new direction with Boss with more relaxed fresh looks that work for the day.

Proenza Schouer went for the tailored to the body with an emphasis on the waist.

Oscar de la Renta was inspired by Ava Gardner for a collection heavy with prints and red but I liked the bow looks.

Ralph Lauren had a stunning collection that was a mixture of breezy and sophisticated.

IFA2015 Highlights

There were many highlights from IFA 2015 from smartwatches to smart appliances. The overall theme was connecting not just digitally but also emotionally. Whereas in the past devices were cold and impersonal today they represent our personalities.

Our criteria’s were based on design or aesthetic that caught our attention.   We wanted the gadget to look good. Secondly, the usefulness of the device was important. Lastly, the most important aspect of any technology is usage and functionality.   We looked at the evolution of a product along a brand or category line with an eye on new features and upgrades for better user interaction experiences. The device should be natural to use. The software and hardware should be seamless as well as intuitive.

Our Picks:

Polaroid Cube

Polaroid Cube red

We had an opportunity using the Polaroid Cube snapping pictures at Fashion Week and Berlinale.

The first impression we had was the eye catching square shape of the camera. Secondly, it is easy to use. One button on top of the device, just click, wait for the red light then green light. Camera images are 6 megapixels. Video and sound qualities are ok. A micro SD card is needed. Downloading  images is simple and fast with the enclosed cable.

The advantage we liked the most about the camera was the size and ability to put it our pocket.

Priced below $100, the Cube is an affordable alternative to expensive other expensive action cameras.

The latest version of the Polaroid Cube with Wi-Fi was launched at IFA 2015 Berlin.

Please go to Black and Paper on Pinterest to see all our images and videos of the Berlinale using the Polaroid Cube or see the images below.

Make Up Artist to the Stars

During the Berlinale 2015 L’Oreal Paris was generous enough to allow us to go behind the scenes to interview Andrej Baranow. Mr. Baranow has been the key make-up artist of the festival for 17 years.

What is your favorite product?

The Eyebrow Plumber! It looks like looks like a mascara brush but it is used to fill and cover up. It can also be used for men cause it’s clear, no color. It is a nice grooming product because it straightens the brows.

Should every celebrity wear red lipstick?

No! Only when the celebrity wants to say, “Hello I am here!”

Is there a Berlinale Look?

I would say defined by L’Oreal Paris with red lips or a clear face. Dark painted smoky eyes are typical or nude mixtures.  But as far as style goes, Berlin is understated, no as glamorous as Cannes so less can be more here.   First time actors here are a little nervous about to what but we tell them the carpet is not so rigid. I can coordinate their make-up look with their fashion choice.

Are there different smoky looks for day and night?

Yes, of course. Darker colors are used for the night, browns and blacks. I bleed the eye shadows. For the day versions I use rosy or nude colors.

Describe your day during the Berlinale

I am on daily standby for around 10 hours. It also depends on the performer, an actress may need more time than an actor.  Sometimes I have appointments with actors to go to hotels or I have to spend a whole day with them.

How did you start as a make-up artist?

I studied to become a tailor but went to theater doing make up, heavy masks for theater acting, then moved into cinema before getting contacted by the beauty business and I have been doing ever since.   I want to be a make-up artist forever.

After a night of partying at the Berlinale, How do you hide the circles under the eyes?

I recommend using L’Oreal Lumi Magique Light Concealer. It is a light, fluid concealer.   At the end of the festival, attendees may need something a bit stronger or heavier because this is Berlin, a city known for its nightlife.

Do you have a celebrity wish list?

Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep. They travel with their teams. I love working on veteran actresses. I am fast but I like the challenge of making a face with character beautiful. It is not so hard making a young actress look great. Isabella Rosselini told me she wished she had met me a look time ago because she wasted a lot of time getting ready in the make-up room.   I worked with Bruce Willis, Anthony Hopkins, and Ben Kinglsey. For 2015 I was with Christian Bale for the whole day.

What would you like to do in the future?

I would like to teach make up. I would like to show women at home to do make up properly. How to create an eye looks, show them what they can do themselves.

Do you have a philosophy?

Yes! I have a few when it comes to my profession. I like to influence the look of the face not change it. I believe in finding the nice features of the face and bringing it out. And,,,The client is King not a Dictator!

Is there a story behind the last one? A crazy Berlinale incident?

One time I had a celebrity who insisted on me following her around while brushing her hair. She even wanted me to go to the bathroom with her. She yelled I hurt her with the brush. After one day of this I told her I was quitting.   Funny enough, she would not accept me leaving and asked me to stay.

L’Oreal Paris has been a sponsor of the Berlinale for 17 years.
