Is the Course Change Working?

What happens when a course change may fail before the actual implementation? The 75th edition of the Berlinale could soon become a case study answering this question.   Less than two months before the German Capital hosts filmmakers, headlines rolling out have painted an unflattering portrait of the Potsdamer Platz headquarters.   Head Tricia Tuttle makes her debut February as the first female head of the international film hub.  Although, reading recent Berlinale news coverage, the American may want to take cover in a dark movie theater in order to forget all the troubles.

Berlinale

Budget cuts, lack of screens, controversial past winners have taken a toll on the Berlinale’s reputation in the global filmmaker community.  Global filmmakers may skip Berlin, weary of being labeled antisemitic because of their stance on the Middle East conflict.  Instead of celebrating cinema, captions reading “a balancing tightrope”, “unwanted fears”, “revising the budget every month” are overshadowing a cinematic event trying to regain competitive footing with Cannes and Venice Festivals.

As for the movies announced so far, the schedule comes as torpid, local, lacking big draws, a zero-sum excitement level.  The Competition category announcement occurs on January 21st. Perhaps then, the Berlinale can regain some it’s lost luster.

The Berlinale starts February 13th.

Another One Gone

Again, the Berlin department store scene suddenly got smaller. Another big retailer is closing the doors. Galeria Kaufhaus in Alexanderplatz will go dark at the end of 2025. According to local papers, property owner Commerz Real wants to develop the property as a mixed use location of apartments and small shops for the Mitte. What the heck is going on? After years of struggling with bad management, falling foot traffic, Galeria Kaufhaus’ new owners hoped for a fresh start reviving the fortunes of the 145 year old chain. Those plans took a setback on Friday afternoon. Rumours circulated the six floor flagship brick and mortar locale was being considered for other uses. After heated negotiations, the owners decided not to renew the lease of the prominent retail outlet.

Galeria Kaufhaus in Alexanderplatz

As a frequent shopper, I am a bit sad GK is closing. The Kaufhaus sat on a transport crossroad of bus, metro, train, tram and bike. Although it is not my idea emporium, I found it easy to pop in now and again to browse or buy a gift. The houseware section offers a nice selection. Secondly, the sweets and beauty selection always have goods on special offers. Berlin’s City East will feel a bit empty in 2026.

All Gussied Up

At the recent press events I attended, noticing the fashion tribe I wondered.  Why do they wear everything but the frying pan? Many were gussied up wearing all the labels from their shelves popping in and out of offices and showrooms. I wondered if there had been a looting at a luxury department store.   The pride of being kitsch while not understand the meaning of the word scares me.

Chanel’s quote is, “The last thing you put on, take off.” This has been lost on the Kill for TikTok crowd.   When at one time anyone with an eye could see quality and style, in today’s social media driven world standing out as if you were the Oscar Mayer Weiner Mobile at a 4th of July Parade means everything.

It is sad to look dated after only two hours.  A great style is eternal.  Jackie O never wore a brand emblazoned on her chest. Before Covid, around 2018, many fashion houses redesigned logos to take advantage of the camera phone ratio in an attempt to attract younger buyers.  Monogramed mania took over the fashion industry. Every piece had to display a name.

The world had been hit with a name brand sledgehammer. The influencers, TikTokers wear everything all at once.  This embellishment veers to pathological bad taste.  Imagine stuck in a room with a person who has a big Louis Vuitton bag, Chanel glasses, oversized Balenciaga sneakers and a shinning Gucci jacket. I needed a certified CPA degree to track all the names.   How many of these items were fake?  No clue!

The shift to subtle fashion has taken place, however I do not think it has made its way to the younger crowd. “Bling” is still a way of life, showing off for the camera.  Thankfully, kitchen items do not have a YSL monogram on the side.

Beach Inspired Tranquillity

Of course not, in August a beach in Usedom does not resemble this picture of tranquillity. The popular Northern German resort becomes a summer getaway for many visitors seeking sun and water. However, I tend to like the Baltic Coast during the less traveled times.

Usedom is a two-hour and thirty minute drive from Berlin.

The Spirited yet Damp 2024 Berlin CSD

A rainy cloud filled 2024 Christopher Street Day hit the city July 27th. Seventy-five trucks slinked through the capital on a ten kilometre journey finishing in Tiergarten at the Siegessäule Column. The weather did not dampen the spirit, just fewer naked bodies on the parade route. This year’s theme “for diversity and democracy” is a call for different communities to unite during these tense times.

Au Revior Galerias Lafayette Berlin

A sad goodbye to Galerias Lafayette Berlin, the five floor department store gave the city a bit of affordable Parisian Chic. After 28 years in the Mitte District, the celebrated building housing French Cuisine, handbags and perfume closes the doors at the end of July. Once a staple for shopping in the city, the establishment fell on hard times before COVID, with the pandemic and slow moving economic challenges, the owners announced the location would shutter back in October 2023. I will miss the baguettes and cheese section.
