Black and Paper Christmas List-DXO One

DxO One Camera

During IFA16 Week the Black and Paper caught with the founders of DxO One.  Not an ordinary camera, the DxO One is a pocket size camera that connects with the iPhone.    But do not let the size fool you.  This is a powerful camera capable of producing professional images.

Designed around the philosophy of “The best camera is the camera you have with you” the DxO One delivers complex photo mechanics in a small frame.   This is the first generation camera from the Paris/San Francisco based firm made up of engineers and photography enthusiasts.

As with other cameras in the category, the DxO One is compact making it easy to carry around but great lengths went into making it distinguished from other cameras in the small and light range.

Equipped with a 1 inch sensor and 20.2 megapixels means the camera can get details even in low light situations. The specially designed lens allows the user to play with depth of field and Brokeh effects of background and foreground blurring. Video Camera and Mic are included.

The iOS app is available for downloading on the iPhone along with updates.  The touch control is simple to use.  Overall the camera’s flexibility is advantageous for the user regardless of the situation from producing the perfect selfie to shooting videos at angles.

The DXO One has received raved reviews from Forbes, Wall Street Journal, and Digital Photo to name a few.

I asked the developers when the camera will be available for Android users.  The response was “it is in development”.

A Black and Paper creative colleague used the camera during IFA.  She fell in love with the DxO One.  Her first impression from using the camera was the sharp picture quality.

The DXO One is available in stores and online including at Colette Paris.

Canon Legria

LEGRIA HF G40 Angle4_tcm83-1333741

As in past posts, I review tech devices that are consumer friendly.  I tend to run from appointment to appointment, place to place, so I favor small, portable devices that can deliver because depending on the situation I will either need pictures or videos.

I used the Canon Legria HFG30 HD camcorder during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin.  The camcorder was easy to handle and flexible in my hand.   I used the recorder for producing behind the scenes images of shows and impromptu interviews with designers.    During Fashion Week I adapt a Guerilla Maker film style of handheld shooting because I never know what will happen or where is action is taking place.

The control buttons were conveniently placed for fast operation of all the features. There is a 3.5in OLED touch screen monitor for viewing with a touchscreen; there is an optional view finder.  Equipped with Wi-Fi for fast uploads to social media outlets.  I decided to review my footage from the SD Card (comes with two SD Card Slots) on my PC before channeling videos online.

On the top panel there is a camera and media playback button for recording and effects.  Secondly, there is an Auto and Cinema button for filters and special effects.   The digital zoom optics are smooth, the color accuracy is superior making it easy to capture good images.   There are two inputs for microphone and headphone usage.  For the series videographers there is a shoe on top for adding accessories.

I did find when turning on the camera the interface/software was a bit slow at the beginning.  Secondly, for some reason viewing directly was not possible from the card. When I was transferring content from the SD-Card to the Mac there was an additional step of searching for images or videos using Photo.

I recommend the Canon Legria HFG30.  I had a lot of fun with it.  The price is a bit steep but worth it.

For more information go to Canon.

Canon EOS M3

EOS M3 EF-M18-55STM Beauty

I used the Canon EOS M3 for to make images and video on my trip to Paris. This is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.  Nice design and more importantly lightweight for handling. This was a key feature for me running around Paris for appointments; weight fatigue was not an issue because camera weighed around 4 grams.

I made over 1200 pictures in 3 days. Image quality was sharp using the 18 to 55 mm kit lens and 24 megapixels sensors.

Video specs were 1080/30p.   The quality was up to par for my tasks for on camera interviews.  The in camera microphone was satisfactory but I recommend an external microphone for interviewing.

Battery life is long lasting but in AF and video settings expect a shorter time expectancy.

I slipped the M3 in and out of my bag, many times taking pictures on the go, briefly stopping to take snapshots of store windows. The grip was balanced and comfortable.

The Canon Menu Mode Dial as well as a 3 inch interface touchscreen, flips outward for easy use even in selfie mode. There is Wifi capability for remote wireless control and image transfer using your iOS or Android smartphone.

Overall the EOS M3 is a good camera

Polaroid Cube

Polaroid Cube red

We had an opportunity using the Polaroid Cube snapping pictures at Fashion Week and Berlinale.

The first impression we had was the eye catching square shape of the camera. Secondly, it is easy to use. One button on top of the device, just click, wait for the red light then green light. Camera images are 6 megapixels. Video and sound qualities are ok. A micro SD card is needed. Downloading  images is simple and fast with the enclosed cable.

The advantage we liked the most about the camera was the size and ability to put it our pocket.

Priced below $100, the Cube is an affordable alternative to expensive other expensive action cameras.

The latest version of the Polaroid Cube with Wi-Fi was launched at IFA 2015 Berlin.

Please go to Black and Paper on Pinterest to see all our images and videos of the Berlinale using the Polaroid Cube or see the images below.
