A Gucci Moment in Miland
Black and Paper Re-See of the Gucci Fall 2017 Collection.
The looks presented this season were inspired by the fantasies of Alessandro Michele. There were 100 looks with many pieces ranging from oriental umbrellas to my personal favorite, sheer suits. Feeling a bit like a couture collection, there were many rich details and embellishments, ranging from embroiled pearls on cuffs and male cut out pants suits. Gucci is a brand of accessories, and all were on hand from the new bag with a symmetrical cut and flats in a gladiator style made of styles or the jacquard shoes. There was no overall universal theme this season, except using every color in the spectrum; while I was going over the looks, I was reminded of the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, fun, optimistic, creative from a designer who is looking to the future.

The final day of screenings, the Romanian film Ana, Mon Amour from previous Golden Bear winner Calin Peter Netzer ran for the press in Competition. A complicated psychological love story involving, sex and religion. The narrative structure of the film is complex, flashbacks. It was noted the film was influenced by Bergman’s Scene from a Marriage.
Starring Diana Cavallioti and Mircea Postelnicu as a couple with challenges, the director focused on close ups of the actors to move the story along. There is a lot of nudity along with a strong sex scene, was the sex over the top? The opinions were mixed.
Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Director James Mangold arrived at the Berlinale with their new film Logan, another sequel to the Marvel Comics X-Men/Wolverine Series. The latest franchise installment screened out of competition. The applause level was 4/10. After a festival of so many heavy films, it was a relief to see a Hollywood Blockbuster film.
Logan marks the end of the series for star Jackman. He and his team took on a darker tone with the R rated saga with a marked increased level violence and the added ingredient of eleven year old killing machine Laura (Dafne Keen). This was a controversial topic during the press conference. Mangold defended the violence by saying his film was aimed at adults.
I did not see the film but the press room feedback was mostly positive.

Berlinale with Arri
Arri is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The famed camera maker is a leading technology firm in the motion picture industry.
The new Trinity Mount is a new tool to produce films offering great flexibility. For those of you in film production you understand the time used for setting up shots. With this device, time is saved because the director and Cinematography do not lose time setting up shots.
When I watch movies I am always curious about the production of the film. I ask myself how did the team set up a certain shot? What lighting style or lens was employed? How was the camera choreographed for movement. I have watched Rope and Touch of Evil many times just for the tracking shots and long takes. Imagine what Hitchcock or Welles would have done with the Arri Trinity?

The 67th Berlinale opened with some political questions on the agenda but Jury President Paul Verhoeven stating he was here to judge the quality of the movie, not the political perspective. Mr. Verhoeven said he expects to see a lot of movies that are different and have heated arguments with respect.
Jury member Diego Luna addressed the current global political tones by saying, “I am not here to send messages but I am here to listen.” When asked about the proposed wall between the US and Mexico Luna commented, I have good memories crossing the border from both sides.
As a film festival Berlinale has always had a political edge but this year the jury seemed more pragmatic, less overtly ideological.
Berlinale makes an effort not to be taken over by market forces said fellow jury member Olafur Eliasson.
Addressing the issues concerning the state of Hollywood and the lack of Adult Movies, the bottom line mentality has taken control of the industry. Studios and Producers only want to invest in films with big returns. Film Director (Total Recall, Elle, and Robo Cop) Verhoven discussed the challenges of trying to get his latest film Elle produced.

During Milan Fashion Week Milan Menswear I attended the Luca Larenza presentation. My verdict? I liked it The collection was centered on knitwear along with a print look wide stripes. The designer had classic touches mixed youthful and modern twists.

Founded in 2012, the Lucio Vanotti brand philosophy is minimalism. Chosen by Giorgio Armani to present his collection in the Armani Theatre, this season the designer displayed his latest menswear looks at Pitti Uomo in Florence.
Mr. Vanotti preferred loose fitting silhouette that elongated the body with stripes and high waist fittings.

Milan Fashion Week Men Ferutdin Zakirov
Lux Style is the term I would use to describe menswear brand Ferutdin Zakirov. Heavy on looks based on leather and fur. I was impressed with the detail and quality of the items. Being a new label I expected a few mistakes, gladly I found none, but the attention to quality was apparent. The snake skin leather jacket was highlight. The looks were first class casual wear for the man who does not want to dress up but wants to be noticed for his rich style.
