Met Gala

The spectacle that was the Met Gala 2017 theme was Rei Kawakubo, the Avant grade designer and founder of Comme des Garcons.  Known for conceptual designs, Kawakubo has been at the forefront of edgy, sometimes surreal looks since 1969.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s curator Andrew Bolton and Vogue US Editor in Chief Anna Wintour have called “Rei a major influence in the world of fashion.”   This writer would agree. Comme des Garcons advances fashion design in ways few other brands would even dare to try.  Kawakubo advanced the colors, shapes and materials in unusual ways that were later filtered through to mainstream fashion.

There was no knockout look this year as A-list celebrities were challenged to merge Red Carpet with Vanguard style.  Some did well; some should deserved honorable mentions, while others went over the cliff in failure.

Hit the Mark-Lily Collins, Sofia Sanchez, Ashley Graham, and Cynthia Erivo

Best Suits-Rami Malek, Cara Delevinge, and Aymeline Valade

Ralph Lauren Bedroom Collection from Bloomingdales in the form of a dress-Lena Dunham

Naked and too much sharing in all the wrong places-Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid

Bride of Dracula-Katy Perry

Misunderstood the invitation-Emma Roberts and Katie Holmes

Beetlejuice-Grace Hartzel

Surprisingly Demure-Kim Kardashian and Niki Minaj

Berlinale European Shooting Stars Hannah Hoekstra

Hannah Hoekstra from The Netherlands.  A graduate of the Amsterdam Theatre School  she has played lead and supporting roles in Dutch films and theater.  I found her to be very outgoing, bubbly with an enthusiasm for life.

Hannah Hoekstra

What type of roles do you prefer?

I want to play all while broadening my horizon.  I was lucky I had a role in a film where I aged from 14 to 68.

What was your first acting role?

I was in a film titled Heaven, Hemel in Dutch.   I was 20.  It was tough movie psychologically.

What inspired you to become an actress?

Life! I think everyone plays characters when they are young.  Most people stop when they grow older but I did not want to do that.  I wanted to continue.

What is your professional ambition?

Explore and learn.

IS there a performer you admire?

Meryl Streep.  She brings life to everything.

What are your future plans?

I am in the National Theatre preparing for a role.  I have a part in a small film then  after two months I am free.

The European Shooting Stars is a program designed to focus the spotlight on young acting talent.  Each year a jury chooses 10 performers with screen experience to be presented at the Berlinale as the “Stars of Tomorrow”.

Berlinale Day Day 5

A whirlwind day at the Berlinale with so many interviews but a film has emerged, The Party from director Sally Potter.  Stay Tuned for more.

Shooting Stars is now 20 years old.  The Pan European program has been celebrated for spotting emerging talent, helping talented performers to the next levels of their careers.    This year there the 14 picks are:

Shooting Star Mausa Majer from Slovenia

Esben Smed* from Denmark, Louis Hofman* from Germany, Alessandro Borghi from Italy, Elina Vaska from Latvia, Hannah Hoekstra* from The Netherlands, Zofia Wichlacz from Poland, Victoria Guerra from Portugal, Tudor Aaron Istodor* from Romania, Marusa Majer* from Slovenia, and Karin Franz Korlof from Sweden.

*Stay tuned for the Black and Paper feature on these actors.

The press room opinions are in and it looks like The Dinner is a winner.  Judging by the level of applause at the press conference I would say the film was well received.  With an accomplished ensemble cast of veterans, director Sally Potter made a black and white film that was light and lovely but what can go wrong when people lose touch their principals.  Commenting, “my favorite films are in Black and White and this is a part of the lineage.  Working with Russian cinematography Aleksei Rodionov, the film is a performance character based project.  Shot over two weeks the actors had to get it right the first time.  Co-star Kristin Scott Thomas admitted it was like doing a play with little rehearsal time, there was no time for many takes.    German Actor Bruno Ganz, an actor not known for comedic roles, made an impression going against type.

The Party stars Cillian Murphy, Kristin Scott Thomas, Timothy Spall, Patricia Clarkson, and Bruno Ganz.  The film screens in Competition at the Berlinale.

Arri Trinity

My first impression of the new mega Arri Stedicam Trinity was exoskeleton.   Weighting in between 20 to 30 kilos the new camera mount is the latest innovation in the firm’s 100 years.  Granted it is a James Cameron dream come true, an achievement in technical advancement for film production.   Currently there are only 10 in available. Stay tuned for the upcoming Black and Paper  video.

I had a one on one interview with filmmaker Yance Ford.  His documentary feature Strong Island was well received at the Sundance Film Festival.  A story of a senseless murder, except the victim was the helmer’s brother,   shot because of an altercation concerning repairs over a car.  This documentary resonated with me given the present climate in the USA and the continue killings of African American men.

Stay tuned for the Q&A with Mr. Ford

L’Oréal at Berlinale

L‘Oreal Paris at the Berlinale 2016

Making sure the stars look good under the flash bulbs and spotlights during the Berlinale is the job of make-up and hair artist Andrej Baranow. Once again we managed to catch up with him towards the end of the festival for a fast interview.

How is it going?

This is my 18th year at the Berlinale. I have had a lot of things to do but in a good way. There is a team of 14. We have done a number of calls to hotels, etc.  There have been many press conferences, some days 5 to 7.

No Diva Attitudes! Meryl Streep is so down to Earth, very human, no fuss at all.   Alexander Skarsgard is a very keen about grooming.

What is the Berlinale Look for 2016?

The J-Lo looks with dark eyes and super Red Carpet Black Mascara and lashes. We have a new product, False Lash Superstar Red Carpet Blush. It is a 2 in 1 product for thickening and extending the lash.  There are the Red Lips on the Carpet this year. A woman cannot hide with red lipstick. She wants to be seen.

What else is new?

L’Oreal has a lipstick with a powdery base, very consistent, does not dry the lips. It comes in nude tones. Also, there is a Sculpturing Blush I use for contouring and sharpening facial features.   I work with it as a way to layer.

Some new blush colors. They are glowing, sparkly, and sparkling. There is a new lip palette coming in April.

What have you been doing since we last met in 2015?

A lot of beauty and catalog shootings. I worked with Diane Keaton. She is so gorgeous.

Also, I have been working at Babelsberg Film Studio demonstrating to 200 actors on how to apply special effect make up in the Zombie Style.

Andrej is the key make-up and hair stylist for the Berlinale.  L’Oreal Paris has been an official partner of the Berlinale since 1998.

Make Up Artist to the Stars

During the Berlinale 2015 L’Oreal Paris was generous enough to allow us to go behind the scenes to interview Andrej Baranow. Mr. Baranow has been the key make-up artist of the festival for 17 years.

What is your favorite product?

The Eyebrow Plumber! It looks like looks like a mascara brush but it is used to fill and cover up. It can also be used for men cause it’s clear, no color. It is a nice grooming product because it straightens the brows.

Should every celebrity wear red lipstick?

No! Only when the celebrity wants to say, “Hello I am here!”

Is there a Berlinale Look?

I would say defined by L’Oreal Paris with red lips or a clear face. Dark painted smoky eyes are typical or nude mixtures.  But as far as style goes, Berlin is understated, no as glamorous as Cannes so less can be more here.   First time actors here are a little nervous about to what but we tell them the carpet is not so rigid. I can coordinate their make-up look with their fashion choice.

Are there different smoky looks for day and night?

Yes, of course. Darker colors are used for the night, browns and blacks. I bleed the eye shadows. For the day versions I use rosy or nude colors.

Describe your day during the Berlinale

I am on daily standby for around 10 hours. It also depends on the performer, an actress may need more time than an actor.  Sometimes I have appointments with actors to go to hotels or I have to spend a whole day with them.

How did you start as a make-up artist?

I studied to become a tailor but went to theater doing make up, heavy masks for theater acting, then moved into cinema before getting contacted by the beauty business and I have been doing ever since.   I want to be a make-up artist forever.

After a night of partying at the Berlinale, How do you hide the circles under the eyes?

I recommend using L’Oreal Lumi Magique Light Concealer. It is a light, fluid concealer.   At the end of the festival, attendees may need something a bit stronger or heavier because this is Berlin, a city known for its nightlife.

Do you have a celebrity wish list?

Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep. They travel with their teams. I love working on veteran actresses. I am fast but I like the challenge of making a face with character beautiful. It is not so hard making a young actress look great. Isabella Rosselini told me she wished she had met me a look time ago because she wasted a lot of time getting ready in the make-up room.   I worked with Bruce Willis, Anthony Hopkins, and Ben Kinglsey. For 2015 I was with Christian Bale for the whole day.

What would you like to do in the future?

I would like to teach make up. I would like to show women at home to do make up properly. How to create an eye looks, show them what they can do themselves.

Do you have a philosophy?

Yes! I have a few when it comes to my profession. I like to influence the look of the face not change it. I believe in finding the nice features of the face and bringing it out. And,,,The client is King not a Dictator!

Is there a story behind the last one? A crazy Berlinale incident?

One time I had a celebrity who insisted on me following her around while brushing her hair. She even wanted me to go to the bathroom with her. She yelled I hurt her with the brush. After one day of this I told her I was quitting.   Funny enough, she would not accept me leaving and asked me to stay.

L’Oreal Paris has been a sponsor of the Berlinale for 17 years.
