One Last Time

During Pars Fashion Week I decided to go to Colette one last time.  How sad I was, the legendary boutique of style is closing at the end of the year.  The usual electric atmosphere of shoppers looking over every item from basic reader glasses to designer sneakers.

Japanese designer Sacai was the brand of the week on the second floor.

I had a café latte then a sandwich in the Colette Lounge before sitting down at the smoking area in front of the store window for a bit of people watching where I met the creative director of a major entertainment company.  We chatted about the store and what we bought.  I am going to miss this place.

Au Revoir Colette

SHOCKED! SADDENED! I could believe it! When I read the email with the headline I was in a state of disbelief. How? What? There was no warning. So many questions raced through my head.  Colette is closing at the end of the year after 20 years.  The influential concept store on Rue Saint Honore, Paris will go dark on December 20th stating in a release, “All good things must come to an end.”  So there it was a simple sentence to confirm the news.

When I started Black and Paper I traveled to Paris for fashion week.  I managed to get an interview and store tour for the new magazine.  Why was this significant?  The webzine was small and much unknown to the public and in the profession but you would have never known this by the way the staff treated me.  All were professional.  I was treated like an editor of Vogue.  The store policy has always been we treat everyone equally.  Yes, they did and still do.

Founded by in 1997 by Colette Rousseaux, Colette was a force in fashion from the beginning with designer collaborations, championing new and independent fashion designers, or limited edition products from luxury to everyday brands.  An intimate location covering 3 floors, it has been a trendsetting destination from the start, always “in”. A shopper could find an item for $10.000 or a something for $3.00.

I will miss going to the store to see the crowds of fashion style enthusiasts.  I liked having a Café Latte in the basement café.  I will cherish the moments.

Colette Experience

What is a trip to Paris without a visit to Colette on Rue Saint-Honore?  Always an experience, never dull, this boutique is a world class destination for fashion and trends with hundreds of distinctive, diverse items reflective of its status as first class shopping destination.

Black and Paper Chat during Paris Fashion Week in Colette.

What is Colette?

Fashion is a piece of the puzzle.  It is art, watches, food, streetwear.    And there is intimacy here.   The buyers select but 1 person decides on what is in the store.  It is all one vision.  But Colette loves life.

Are there plans to open another store?

NEVER! There are no plans.  All the focus is on this store.

Why do non-fashion brands want to be sold here?

They want to touch another type of clients.  We can display products in a new way.  We had an event with Samsung.  Coca Cola (Special Edition Bottle), Happy Plugs, Fuji Camera, Disney, World Cup, and Moet Chandon had special “Colette Collections” only available here.

The Colette Café is a meeting point especially at Fashion Week, there are people from all over the world.

(Side note: During our conversation a well-known magazine editor and publisher came by our table to say “hi.”)

It is a destination where fashion people have to come.   Lagerfeld came in to shop without the drama.  He is often here.  But all customers are treated equally, the same service whether Jay Z or a person who walks in for the first time for a 4.00 euro café or a 4000 euro one of a kind Ready to Wear jacket.

It is a meeting point all the time.  It is very difficult to get bored in Colette.   There is always investment in the store to keep it fresh and new, it is the curiosity factor.   Like the menu designs and wallpaper, these are redone every 2 weeks.

There is always an event ranging from a pop up store to book signing.  Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington had a successful book signing.

The Burberry London Fashion Week See Now Buy Now event was very successful.  We had a video feed of the runway show, then after we allowed viewers to buy the see and buy the collection

Independent Brands are always supported in the store.

YES!  They are the future.

Paskal Clothes form the Ukraine .

Sacai from Japan is great, a brand mixing RTW with Bespoke.

The Fabrizio Viti shoe collection is a must have.

What’s popular now ?

Chris Kane Sweatshirts are popular.  Kongol hats, Puma High Heels.  Streetwear is in the store’s DNA.

What about shopping online?

The website is the Colette experience but on a screen. Everything in the store is online.

Black and Paper Christmas List-DXO One

DxO One Camera

During IFA16 Week the Black and Paper caught with the founders of DxO One.  Not an ordinary camera, the DxO One is a pocket size camera that connects with the iPhone.    But do not let the size fool you.  This is a powerful camera capable of producing professional images.

Designed around the philosophy of “The best camera is the camera you have with you” the DxO One delivers complex photo mechanics in a small frame.   This is the first generation camera from the Paris/San Francisco based firm made up of engineers and photography enthusiasts.

As with other cameras in the category, the DxO One is compact making it easy to carry around but great lengths went into making it distinguished from other cameras in the small and light range.

Equipped with a 1 inch sensor and 20.2 megapixels means the camera can get details even in low light situations. The specially designed lens allows the user to play with depth of field and Brokeh effects of background and foreground blurring. Video Camera and Mic are included.

The iOS app is available for downloading on the iPhone along with updates.  The touch control is simple to use.  Overall the camera’s flexibility is advantageous for the user regardless of the situation from producing the perfect selfie to shooting videos at angles.

The DXO One has received raved reviews from Forbes, Wall Street Journal, and Digital Photo to name a few.

I asked the developers when the camera will be available for Android users.  The response was “it is in development”.

A Black and Paper creative colleague used the camera during IFA.  She fell in love with the DxO One.  Her first impression from using the camera was the sharp picture quality.

The DXO One is available in stores and online including at Colette Paris.

Colette Paris

IMG_0523Colette is a boutique in the heart of Paris with an electric mix of brands.   located in the center of Parisone of the most influential stores in the fashion world with a loyal clientele shopping for the latest items from limited edition style looks to books or just a place to have a leisure cafe. But do not mistake it as a place for only “fashionistas”, Colette welcomes everyone.

An interview with Media Head Guillaume Salmon,  Public Relations Director of Colette, Guillaume has worked for the store since 1999.

Why is Colette a special boutique?

There is a magical feeling here. It is a family store. Mademoiselle Collette and Sara, Creative Director and Buyer have their own feeling of style and fashion, it is from the heart no the bottom line. We never talk about targets. This is an independent store. So there is no pressure. Sara selects what she wants from collections. She can decide on selling one piece or more.

Another big part of the success is the human environment for human soul of Colette. This is not a store for only jet setters but for everyone. We are not snobbish but have an open door. All buyers can find something they can afford for either 1 euro or for thousands of euros from art to coffee.

The store likes to introduce special editions along with a good mix of exclusive releases. There are the famous brands with the young designers side by side.

How does the store stay on top of trends?

First, we are always curious. Sara is always working, looking. Designers contact us concerning collaborations.

Why do fashion designers and brands want to be here?

They like the way we work. For Paris it is important for them to be here. We had the Apple Watch on display before the launch, the first in France.

Describe the store environment

Since 1997, we have had the same location on Rue Saint-Honore. We change the windows and displays every week. We tell stories. It is very important. There are many events and releases in the store. (Side Note: While wondering through the store I asked the staff many questions. They were friendly as well as informative.)

IMG_0504

Who are the clients?

Many French of course, but from all over the world. Like I said, we are for everyone. We select and they like, we like.

Street culture lines are big launches. Sometimes people sleep in front of the store. Once when we launched sneakers we had a person sleep in their car for two days. (Side Note: The day of this interview coincided with the first day of sales for the Kayne West collection at the store. There was a long line at the door.)

Where is fashion going at the moment?

Fashion is a huge business.   There will always be luxury brands like Dior and Hermes. Those brands are like a dream. The way a person feels while wearing them.

The traditional brands are doing collaborations with chain stores like Uniqlo and H&M.   The looks are well designed while affordable.

Many new young designers are building their own brands. People want something different, new, and fresh.

Are there any exciting brands on the scene?

Vetements has a big buzz. The brand bridges streetwear and high fashion well tastefully. People were excited.  We bought the second collection.

Do you have a favorite designer?

OAMC for menswear, two guys merged fashion and streetwear using nice material. I liked Adam Kimmel but he stopped designer.   Off White from Virgil Obloh is good, streetwear.    He worked with Kayne West as a fashion consultant.

I like Buscemi Sneakers.
