Fashion History Hollywood Style

A lush pictorial history of Hollywood costume designer as a Cinephile and fashion editor the coffee table book “Creating the Illusion” has become a guide and style reference point.    Starting from the genesis of the film industry to the modern day, authors Jay Jorgensen and Donald L. Scoggins give in depth narratives of craftspeople responsible for creating cinema’s most iconic looks by helping performers build characters that would make them famous on silver screens around the world.

Informative as well as entertaining from Page 1, Chapter 1 “Creating the Illusion” weaves together fascinating features with pictures, illustrations, and narratives on the giants of the field; Head, Adrian, Plunkett, Kelly, Louis,  and Banton.  But also included are stories of artist Erte and fashion designer Chanel forays into film costume design.  Without skipping the spotlight shines on other well-known equally talented figures including Irene, Rose, and Travilla to name a few.

A vast number of films are discussed from “Salome”, “Gone with the Wind” to “The Matrix” mixed with behind the scenes anecdotes involving studios, directors, and movie stars; Liz Taylor’s gold costume from “Cleopatra” or the battle of wills involving Marilyn Monroe against Fox, and Dietrich’s iconic jewel encrusted dress from “Angel” are just some of the fascinating stories involving designers caught in the political maneuverings of movie making.

If you have a collection of cinema books or fancy yourself as a film buff I recommend “Creating the Illusion”.   I had so much fun while inspired reading about relationships between costume designers have with movie stars and their involvement in the creative process of film production.

Creating The Illusion is available at your local bookstore or on order from Amazon.

Sunglasses are modern accessories that can transform appearances as while as alter the wearers identity, a play tool of outward expression.

A Brief History

Sunglasses evolved from two sources: 18th century Venice tinted green eye wear glasses were used for protecting residents from the glare of the water.  Forward to the 20th century eye wear evolved to Driving Goggles and Aviator Glasses of World War One.  Today there are many choices in shapes, colors, and materials to fit every taste.

This is the season for sunglasses. I decided to have a conversation with my local eye wear specialist at Schoenhelden in Berlin.

What is the trend this season ?

Round lenses with mirrors, small sizes.  Mirror colors are blue, silver,

green and gold. Gradient colors for women, top of the frame is dark but fades downward, very feminine. Red frames are out!

What details should wearers look for when buying sunglasses?

Polarizing Lens are relaxing for the eyes because they cut the sun glare.  This is good for driving on the road or the reflection from the water.

Hygiene care is important.  Nose Pads! It drives us crazy. If they are made of silicon they become dirty and discolored from sweat and bacteria.  Metal is better.  If the pads are too small the glasses hang incorrectly on the face.

Are there any specific recommendations for buyers on shapes and styles?

In general when a person buys a pair of sunglasses he or she want to look good so buying frames depend on the facial shape.

For the Face Recommendations: Heart Shape Face: Round Frame, Square Face Contrast Shape, Frames like Aviator Style, Round Face-Square Frames, Oval-Many styles

Now there is bespoke fitting technology for the sunglasses, a pair is specifically fitted for the face.

The style of frames depends on what statement you want to make

Aviator Cool, Sexy, Masculine, Wayfarer-Classy, Wraparounds-Sporty, Youthful, Athletic, Oversize-Dramatic, Tea Shade-Modern Hip Special

Are there any special brands?

We have noticed people are moving away from big names, those are not about quality but more about a brand. Individualism is now the trend. We love IC Berlin, Munic Eyewear, and Eyevan. Eyevan has special high quality details.  Munic has products that feel and look good.  IC Berlin merges Fashion, Unique Style and Tech. Julbo from France is popular with young people.

A Life of Pictures Part 2

The second part of the interview with Photographer Vladimir Sichov.

What is your favorite cover?

e5312e24d166ec0f881326a8e734ed12The November Cover of Paris Match showing The Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Romania Revolution Cover.

Why are you still motivated to take pictures?

I am a street life photographer.  I look for moments, unknown people.  I take pictures fast.   The right way to be a street photographer is to be quick while not drawing attention to you.   I place tape over the camera labels and numbers for discretion.

What is your favorite device?

I like fixed lens.  I used Leica until 92 then switched to Canon.

Who was your artistic influence?

Bresson was a God with his sense of composition.  He was the master and everyone else is several steps below.  We spoke several times.  I asked him how many good pictures he made.  He said around 40.

Who was the most difficult subject?

The Vogue Studio and those white walls.   I prefer action to studio, black and white over color.

Politics and politicians have played a major role in your works.

In May 1981 French President Giscard lost the election to Mitterand.  I was assigned to go to his house in the Middle of France with other press people. All only had 20 minutes.  After he learned I was Russian he spoke to my team for over 40 minutes.    He said his favorite politician was Brezhnev.  I spent 2 week with him on holiday in the Holy Land after he left office.   His wife was religious.

And Chirac?

Prime Minister Jacques Chirac opened a world for me.   I was a stateless so he arranged for me to have a French Passport.

Having covered so politics and events, what do you think of the current state of Europe?

If I had written articles on what I thought I would have been fired immediately.  There is a body of unelected people (EU Commission) making disastrous decision for Europe.  There is no Ford to build an industry.   So much has been destroyed, from textile to steel production.

What were the most interesting assignments?

There are many but some now:

I was in the Soviet Union covering the Michael Jackson concert in 1989 before the coup.  I felt something was going on so I called my editor and decided to stay in Moscow a little while longer.  The tanks rolled into the city.  I saw it all in front of The Russian White House.   I was wounded, shot.

When Gorbachev went into exile I was with him for 3 days.

Vladimir Horowitz-018Horowitz was fun.  I wanted to show him doing more than at the piano.  Russians love ice cream and playing chess.  He asked me if I loved ice cream.  Yes!

I made images of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge at their apartment.  One of those images was used at the Christie’s auction in 2009. It was rare assignment because they did not normally allow images made in their flat.

I accompanied Keith Haring here (Berlin) to take pictures of him painting the Wall for the mural.  He was really fast.   That was in 1986.    I made pictures of him doing work on the Grace Jones video.

Keith Haring, american artist, makes painting on the Berlin Wall. Berlin, 1986.

What advice would you give a photographer?

Love what are doing and you will never have a problem.  If you find a job you like and you will never work.  Do not expect rewards.

Cushnie Et Ochs at Berlin Fashion Week

The New York City based label showed its Resort Collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin.   The 90’s were back according to the designers for looks that were solid, wearable with many looks holding the body together.   Soft, solid colors were the norm with a bust of a chromatic blue dress then to small floral patterns to choose for the lady going out in the evening.

Fashion Week Berlin 2016

Seek and Premium – During Berlin Fashion Week many brand trade fairs are convened for buyers and sellers to meet to discuss and arrange what will be sold in stores the following seasons.  While it lacks the glamour of a runway show, this is where the real business of fashion is done, with over 2500 collections of all sorts from street ware to luxury bags competing for attention for the opportunity,  a small brand could go from obscurity to becoming a household name based on a decision of a retail buyer to sell a collection in a store.

As press, the trade fairs are valuable source for gagging upcoming fashion trends in colors, materials and fabrics, or shapes, or perhaps finding a label to champion.

Vladimir Sichov is a professional news photographer.  Over the span of his 36 year career he has covered many events and stories from Paris Fashion Week  to the Fall of the USSR.
