A 60’s Style

I travelled to Dresden Germany, a historical city in Eastern Germany.  Luxury watch maker Glashutte Original has a boutique in centre.  Paying a visit I got to see the collection and play with one of my favourite pieces. Here is a hint: my eye travels to color, style, and anything retro 60’s style.

Stay Tuned for more about my visit to Glashutte Original.

WHICH ONE?

I could not decide on which card to use.  Each one is a bit different but,,, honestly, is the viewer really going to notice the letters?

Not Over the TOP!

Menswear looks do not have to be over the top in oder to stand out.  Sometimes it is better to mix and match pieces to get the effect. At times an entire expressive look can be a style train wreck.  Too much is happening in all directions.  With mens fashion a way of standing out is just use one piece.  I liked the Marni collection because there were parts of the collection that could stand stand alone.  The brands jacket or suit with the classic wardrobe piece such as a white shirt is enough.   A person does not have to over do it to be seen.

A Preview from Berluti

Launched in 1895 in Paris by Alessandro Berluti, the eponymous menswear label has a long heritage of being the dandy reference for style. Worn by Frank Sinatra, Robert DiNiro, and Yves Siant Laurent to name a few.  Berluti was a brand known for leather shoes and custom bespoke suits.

On a trip to Paris I had an appointment on rue Marbeuf, by luck, the Berluti atelier and store were next door. Could I resist? No! I walked in for a moment of fashion admiration.  It is brand I plan to add to my closet.

Belgian Designer Kris Van Assche is now head of the house. The former Dior Menswear designer, is a graduate from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Art. Assche’s appointment as head of the Parisian brand is one I am cautiously happy about this because I think his minimal styled approach could work, male classicism mixed with streetwear influences.

This preview capsule collection gives me hope, the first full fashion show will be be shown at the upcoming Paris Fashion Week Men, nothing over the top, staying with the strengths. The colors scheme is reds, black and white, and tailored suits.

I am still not a fan of the chunky trainer look, maybe it is a generational gap, but Berluti has introduced them.  I could also do without the over the top branding.  Fashion is a business based on trends, the brand has to cater to what buyers want, and “big” “show your brand” is “in” with consumers.

I am waiting for January 2019 to see if Berluti + Kris van Assche are a team made in fashion heaven.  It will be very interesting.

Inspired by Opera

I met Rory Hutton in London at Fashion Week Men, a mens accessories designer with a background in illustration. For me, it is always inspiring to meet a person in fashion who is serious about his work, and can have a conversation about the future of his brand, fast forward to a recent email telling me about his latest work.

Mr Hutton’s bowties, pocket squares, and sock designs are for gentlemen who like an accessory styles not heavy on formality, many design print.

A graduate of Limerick School of Art and The National College of Design, Dublin, Rory’s collection can be found in London at Fortnum & Mason.

This year in collaboration with The Royal Opera House London, Rory Hutton designed pieces based on and inspired by the master opera works of Mozart, Verdi, Handel, and Wagner.

Chrono Physical

Arousing or captivating, each watch represents corporal sensibilities.

A  timepiece is an instrument made for measurement.

With the spirit of craftsmanship, art, and masculinity.

A curse on a man for being for being tight muscled, physically good looking, and wearing a great watch!

A timepiece is a part of the classic style that never goes out of style.

An appreciation for the physical form.

The most noticed accessory on a man is a watch.

This is the first in a series for Black and Paper. When Brice and I discussed the mood of the project, I knew he wanted something different than the normal luxury timepiece pics of a guy in a suit in a lush setting. This is a Paris based photographer who’s idols include Herb Ritts, David Bowie, and Madonna. The male form was going to be a part of this. What brand would take a chance on being the first? Thankfully, Tag Heuer gave us full support. There was no pressure, only trust. The Public Relations team even offered more pieces. We are both forever grateful.

BURBERRY

YES! I thought the first Tisci collection for Burberry was a shot in the arm for the brand. He made the looks feel modern while a bit edgy at London Fashion Week.

I will say, I think the new $400 t-shirt is a bit too much, simple cotton at that price.  I think this becomes fashion fooletry! Hype, madness, perfect for the Bling Instagram Age of faking it until you make it.  I need more than a logo over my heart to make me part ways with that amount of cash for a basic item. Is it JUST ME?
