Rolling Stone arrived in my mailbox when I was in college. The magazine cover featured the latest, hippest artists under the banner, always with a catchy headline and the best photography. Founded in 1967 by Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason the square publication spoke to generations of music lovers.
However, I did note the lack of Black Artists on the cover was not lost on me. In some ways Rolling Stone, while projecting its forwardness was in a way a product of its segregated times with all the baggage. There were always rumours of the New York based ‘publication‘s prejudices, African American artists not getting featured or interviews. Their frequent Greatest Lists felt weighted in certain biases.
Magazines are not about objectivity, but about their readers. The average RS subscriber was white male, educated.
“I’m always annoyed about why black people have to bear the brunt of everybody else’s contempt,,” Toni Morris.
Imagine American Music without Black People! Who invented Rock N Roll? Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Rosetta Tharpe are credited as founders of the genre that would be the basis for Mr. Wenner’s success. Rolling Stone is a title of a Muddy Waters’s song.
As a person gets older, the truth becomes an anchor, true feelings are revealed. During a recent podcast to promote his book, Mr. Jenner (77) admitted his feelings about African Americans artists not being articulate enough to consider them masters alongside white male counterparts U2, John Lennon, Jerry Garcia. In his defense, The co-founder included Joni Mitchell on his inarticulate list. With a liberal like this, who needs a conservative.
Jann has been removed from The Rock and Roll Hall of fame board. Well, at least he will keep his fortune from covering music created by People of Color.

One Survived The Rain,

The Jabra Elite Earplugs, I got a pair in the mail from the public relations agency. I already use the brand’s Evolve 2 on hear device.

My recommendation: Get a pair. The bluetooth earbuds are a solid superior piece of music gear with voice prompts and noise cancellation features. For daily use at the gym for my 90 minute routine, there have never been problems with the fitting during workouts. Tap features make for easy use and connectivity with with my music playlist.
Thankfully the Elites are waterproof. One dropped from my back on the side walk in front of my flat. It rained the same night. I went looking the next day, found it, placed the bud in the recharger case, worked as if nothing happened.
After using a cheaper brands headphone, The Elite 75 pro has a superior sound quality. I have used the microphone because normally, I do not take so many calls on my smartphone.
Battery life is good, I normally recharge the two after days usage.

What did Steve think of the affordable Monolith Headphones?

First, the Monolith M300 Planar Headphone set is sumptuously packaged in a deluxe black box that slides out to reveal a leather case with Velcro closure containing a heavy duty plastic headphone with long nylon cable, and metal adaptor. There are also different size plastic ear hooks included which offer adaptability to the user. However, they’re not so flexible. The pieces have a sense of breaking easily which could lead to the trouble of finding more durable replacements. Also included are no less than four sets of ear plugs for added comfort. Overall, the aesthetic is not exactly state of the art. Instead going more for endurance against wear and tear (despite the ear hooks) as opposed to a trend-setting look. The latter could have been easily achieved, perhaps Monolith is looking for an alternative appeal in the market.

The sound performance, ultimately the most important aspect, is where the M300 Planar is at its most competitive. Whether it is on the Laptop, Smart Phone or Amplifier. There is a definitively balanced, detailed and spacious stereo soundscape clarity which elevates it to the level of a practical choice at mid-price level and should ensure customer satisfaction. Compared to other headphones in its price range there is a conspicuously louder and more balanced sound, layered in its frequency while very harmonious on the ear. Overall, if its sound first and foremost the user is looking for, then the M300 Planar does well against its competitors.
Where the headsets falter is the heavy black nylon cable with bolt-like adaptor. This is reminiscent of an old electric guitar lead. It might not be everyone’s choice, particularly to youth buyers.

Who was your musical inspiration growing up?
I was obsessed with music from a very young age. There are so many musical inspirations, I couldn’t possibly pick just one. So here are the big three. In second grade, I used to steal the Britney Spears “In The Zone” album from my sister’s room and share my headphones with friends at school during recess. Later, I got assigned to sing a Josh Groban song for 5th grade graduation, but I learned it about four months early, so I checked out another song on the album. I promptly memorized every single song, especially the Italian parts, with a veracity that I still yearn for every time I listen to a new song.
Then there was Lady Gaga. It blew my mind that anyone could make pop that perfect. She also hit mainstream right about the time I was starting to grapple with my sexual orientation. It was so reassuring to see an openly queer artist taking off in the public.B
Being raised around fame and music, did this encourage to become a singer?
There’s something about watching the people you know live their dreams. That helps you to intrinsically understand not only you can follow your dreams, but that you must. I see these people. I feel their energy of fulfillment. It’s infectious! You need it. I do, anyway.I
Is there one song you play over and over again?
There’s a Bea Miller song she wrote with Justin Tranter. It is unbelievable. The title is “It’s not u it’s me”. Pop perfection becuause it is surprising, confident, sexy and fun. Every songwriter I show it to loses their mind immediately. It needs radio play ASAP.
Why did you choose such a public place to come out the closet?
I wouldn’t say that I chose it. One day, I heard “Boys” by Charli XCX and I instantly felt compelled. As if by the Gods to make a bisexual remix version. It was more about the fact I wanted it to exist than about wanting even to make it. From the moment we finished, my whole life changed. I started getting asked to play it live at gay clubs. I was just immediately welcomed into the community. It was amazing! Then all of a sudden, my mom came into town and wanted to see my first big live show. I had to introduce the song, so I didn’t really have a choice. I freaked out. But I’m really glad I did it.

What is your definition of “Fluid Sexuality?”
Fluid sexuality is the same concept as saying you are not the same person every day. I mean technically, yes, of course. We are all the same person every day, but some days we are more or less feminine or masculine. Some days we are more bright and happy and some days we are more prone toward darkness. Neither femininity nor masculinity are inherently bad, nor is the light or the darkness. It is all part of the human experience, and it can all be perceived as beautiful. Some days I am more enticed by male energy in my life. Other days I am more attracted to female energy. My heart doesn’t discriminate.
See the Video Below
What are your tour plans?
Well, I’m headlining The Viper Room in West Hollywood. I’ll be performing two just released singles. A few songs most people don’t know I’m featured on as lead vocal. Some newly unheard material. These sets are an intimate preview of a tour that’s currently in the works.
It Sounds Perfect!

During IFA 2017 I had an audiophile experience that boarded on life changing. I had the opportunity to listen to the Bang and Olufsen Beosound Shape, amazing, another dimension to sound quality.
The Black and Paper interview with Petros Belimpasaksi, head of Sound Category and Platform for Bang and Olufsen.
What is the history of the artwork influence of the Beosound Shape
Inspiration for the concept came from the designer’s experiences with poor room acoustics in an open space environment, something which is becoming increasingly problematic as a consequence of the breaking down of walls between e.g. kitchen and living rooms, where more people are in the same room, but doing different things at the same time. This is also often seen in hotel lobbys, airports and other large open spaces where a lot of things happen simultaneously.
If you need to adjust the room acoustics you need something that breaks up the large surfaces, you have to avoid straight surfaces and get the sound to bounce in different directions. A snow landscape with mountain tops inspired the design, when you see how light on snow is reflected differently and creating different colours of white when you look across the landscape.
We are working with basic mathematical shapes and the hexagonal shape was chosen because it is a great form for creating large volume efficiently and by combining it with the cube and the square, you get enough volume and an interesting shape, you can repeat and extend in all directions. In this case, even the negative space – where there are no tiles – is an important part of the design. It has a very strong decorative element and at the same time it improves the ‘auditive climate’ of the room.
Besides making sound systems, this system has the benefit of not only making great sound, it can also make great silence. A speaker system that creates a great atmosphere in the home, by its mere presence, especially if you have a lot of hard surfaces such as wooden floors, large concrete walls or glass surfaces.
The modularity and thereby the flexibility of this concept is an essential part of BeoSound Shape – by creating hexagonal tiles in different fabric and colour options, you get the possibility to create your very own shape or pattern using different colours and surfaces, and over time renew your look, size and performance as you please.
If fashion or your interior decoration change, it is merely a question of selecting a new colour or fabric tile and click the new cover onto the existing grid. New colour options will be introduced on an annual basis.
Describe the systems parts and specifications
Here are the main components:
On top of those, in every BeoSound Shape there is a “BeoSound Core”. BeoSound Core (http://www.bang-olufsen.com/core) is the connectivity hub that provides all the streaming technologies from the product (eg. WiFi, Chromecast, Apple AirPlay, DLNA, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, etc)
If you would like to get the detailed spec for each component (e.g. power of amplifiers, size of speaker drivers, etc), I would recommend to simply visit the http://www.bang-olufsen.com/shape and scroll all the way to the end, at the “Technical Specification”.
We also have a great short video that explains all those details:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blg2WM7qkx8
Is this a product for only series Audiophiles?
No, on the contrary. The way people live with sound is not necessarily the same or the same for one person at all times. Therefore “one size does not fit all”.
BeoSound Shape is a unique product for people that live with sound, even if in the background. They enjoy music, but it takes a less visual and prominent part of there lives.
They want to Balance technology in their lives to a greater extend. Having technology there, but more in the background. Design and customization is key. Many have multi-functional environments, where the traditional division between rooms disappear and rooms are becoming true living spaces for eating, working, relaxing and playing.
They also use music as a mood setter. And that is what music is most often for – setting a mood. And this in not only true in the privacy of the home, but is actually relevant for many public and business environments too. Music can make people slow down, relax, be mindful, in a party mode or a pace setter at the gym. Therefore it is also used in the professional scene in hotel lobbys, at work or restaurants and the like.
Is this device an investment or a purchase?
You could call it an investment, but not in the terms of financial investment. It is an investment that would allow you, your family and your friends to get most of enjoying time together. Enriching your daily life with music, enhancing your mood as well as improving your room acoustics and interior. So, all in all, improve in general your well being, as good lightning or good air quality do.
At the same time, the product has been designed to be a very long lasting product. You can easily change colors and fabrics, when you redecorate your home. Or, scale it up in size (or sound performance) if you move home and want something larger. Even with the fast moving technology, the “BeoSound Core” connectivity hub can easily be changed and upgraded, as technology updates come in the future (updates that cannot be delivered just with software updates). So indeed this is a product where the customer’s investment is respected and long lasting. That is compared to a world of “fast consumer electronics” and “consumable goods”.
To convince Black and Paper readers , what album would you recommend they try on the system?
Everything sounds great on the BeoSound Shape, especially as it is upmixed with out unique patented algorithm called “Band on the wall”, which gives a great spatial experience. If I was to recommend my personal favorite tracks, those would be: “Hey Laura” by Gregory Porter and “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars.
