Were there personal conflicts concerning your sexuality while being a boy band?

I was told by management and the record label not to look and act “effeminate.” We had to do media training to teach us how to appear more “straight.” It had a big effect on me, especially receiving the news that my flamboyant costumes and stage antics could potentially get the boy band cut from the label.

What period of Madonna’s career influenced you the most?

I loved the Blond Ambition Era. She was powerful and vulnerable at the same time. A lot of what I am going through right now is a reflection of that duality. That was Madonna at her best.

Has it been difficult being a “gender bender” in the Age of Trump?

No, I do what I do regardless of who our President is. At the end of the day, sometimes we need a good kick in the ass to get things into high gear. I feel strengthened these days, not weakened. I can understand how/why LGBT could be nervous at this time but I believe that we will always win at the end of the day because we are strong and resilient and more people these days are realizing that Gay Rights are Human Rights.

How has the concept of masculinity changed?

I produced “The New Alpha” because I started seeing the trend in victim identity and the PC culture. Everyone being offended by everything and using that to manipulate and control their environment. I wanted to strengthen the world. Being gay does not mean that we are weak. Some of the most powerful people in the world are gay. We need to stop playing the victim role and start acting like men. Strong, sensitive, compassionate, responsible, vulnerable, and balanced men.

The New Alpha is a highly dominant successful character who happens to use makeup and wear women’s clothing occasionally because he’s smart enough to realize that these things possess no gender. Masculinity and femininity do not belong to one sex or the other. We need to balance the scales. It’s not healthy to be overly aggressive (a “masculine” trait) and it’s just as toxic to be overly passive (commonly seen as a “feminine” trait).

I see Grace Jones elements in your looks, true or false?

Absolutely. I have love for Grace. She pushed many boundaries. I appreciate artists that do not quite fit the mold.

Is the music business become more accepting of LGBT Artists?

Not exactly. It’s ok to be gay if you hide it. I do not see many mainstream LGBT male artists who are celebrating their sexuality openly. I can count on one hand. If they are openly gay then they play the corporate label game where it’s ok to be gay just as long as you can pass as straight. Labels claim to be progressive and pro-gay but the artists they sign must look/act straight. I intend to challenge all of that.

Do you prefer Blondes or Brunettes?

Blondes.

What are your upcoming plans?

Now, I’m preparing for a tour. You can find all upcoming tour information on my official website: www.RickyRebelRocks.com. My record “The New Alpha” is available on iTunes, Amazon MP3, and Spotify.

Thank you for the interview.

It Sounds Perfect!

During IFA 2017 I had an audiophile experience that boarded on life changing.  I had the opportunity to listen to the Bang and Olufsen Beosound Shape,  amazing, another dimension to sound quality.

The Black and Paper interview with Petros Belimpasaksi, head of Sound Category and Platform for Bang and Olufsen.

What is the history of the artwork influence of the Beosound Shape

Inspiration for the concept came from the designer’s experiences with poor room acoustics in an open space environment, something which is becoming increasingly problematic as a consequence of the breaking down of walls between e.g. kitchen and living rooms, where more people are in the same room, but doing different things at the same time. This is also often seen in hotel lobbys, airports and other large open spaces where a lot of things happen simultaneously.

If you need to adjust the room acoustics you need something that breaks up the large surfaces, you have to avoid straight surfaces and get the sound to bounce in different directions. A snow landscape with mountain tops inspired the design, when you see how light on snow is reflected differently and creating different colours of white when you look across the landscape.

We are working with basic mathematical shapes and the hexagonal shape was chosen because it is a great form for creating large volume efficiently and by combining it with the cube and the square, you get enough volume and an interesting shape, you can repeat and extend in all directions.   In this case, even the negative space – where there are no tiles – is an important part of the design. It has a very strong decorative element and at the same time it improves the ‘auditive climate’ of the room.

Besides making sound systems, this system has the benefit of not only making great sound, it can also make great silence. A speaker system that creates a great atmosphere in the home, by its mere presence, especially if you have a lot of hard surfaces such as wooden floors, large concrete walls or glass surfaces.

The modularity and thereby the flexibility of this concept is an essential part of BeoSound Shape  – by creating hexagonal tiles in different fabric and colour options, you get the possibility to create your very own shape or pattern using different colours and surfaces, and over time renew your look, size and performance as you please.

If fashion or your interior decoration change, it is merely a question of selecting a new colour or fabric tile and click the new cover onto the existing grid. New colour options will be introduced on an annual basis.

Describe the systems parts and specifications

Here are the main components:

On top of those, in every BeoSound Shape there is a “BeoSound Core”. BeoSound Core (http://www.bang-olufsen.com/core) is the connectivity hub that provides all the streaming technologies from the product (eg.  WiFi, Chromecast, Apple AirPlay, DLNA, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, etc)

If you would like to get the detailed spec for each component (e.g. power of amplifiers, size of speaker drivers, etc), I would recommend to simply visit the http://www.bang-olufsen.com/shape and scroll all the way to the end, at the “Technical Specification”.

We also have a great short video that explains all those details:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blg2WM7qkx8

Is this a product for only series Audiophiles?

No, on the contrary. The way people live with sound is not necessarily the same or the same for one person at all times. Therefore “one size does not fit all”.

BeoSound Shape is a unique product for people that live with sound, even if in the background. They enjoy music, but it takes a less visual and prominent part of there lives.

They want to Balance technology in their lives to a greater extend. Having technology there, but more in the background. Design and customization is key.  Many have multi-functional environments, where the traditional division between rooms disappear and rooms are becoming true living spaces for eating, working, relaxing and playing.

They also use music as a mood setter. And that is what music is most often for – setting a mood.  And this in not only true in the privacy of the home, but is actually relevant for many public and business environments too. Music can make people slow down, relax, be mindful, in a party mode or a pace setter at the gym. Therefore it is also used in the professional scene in hotel lobbys, at work or restaurants and the like.

Is this device an investment or a purchase?

You could call it an investment, but not in the terms of financial investment. It is an investment that would allow you, your family and your friends to get most of enjoying time together. Enriching your daily life with music, enhancing your mood as well as improving your room acoustics and interior. So, all in all, improve in general your well being, as good lightning or good air quality do.

At the same time, the product has been designed to be a very long lasting product. You can easily change colors and fabrics, when you redecorate your home. Or, scale it up in size (or sound performance) if you move home and want something larger. Even with the fast moving technology, the “BeoSound Core” connectivity hub can easily be changed and upgraded, as technology updates come in the future (updates that cannot be delivered just with software updates). So indeed this is a product where the customer’s investment is respected and long lasting. That is compared to a world of “fast consumer electronics” and “consumable goods”.

To convince Black and Paper readers , what album would you recommend they try on the system?

Everything sounds great on the BeoSound Shape, especially as it is upmixed with out unique patented algorithm called “Band on the wall”, which gives a great spatial experience. If I was to recommend my personal favorite tracks, those would be: “Hey Laura” by Gregory Porter and “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars.

Tech Q&A Review from Black and Paper

aftershockzThe AfterShockz Wireless Trekz Titanium Headphones are connected via Bluetooth to smartphones and other listening devices.  They are good for running, and other exercise.

What did you like about the AfterShockz Wireless?

While I am riding my bike using the headsets I can hear everything around me, in traffic this is important for safety. I can use wear them with my helmet.  Because the sound travels along the jawbone my ears are free.  The headsets are easy to connect to different devices.  I wore them around the house while doing other things they were very comfortable, the fit was snug.

When I was in the room I could listen to two different sources. I am the type of to have a conversation and listen to my audio book.  I listened to football games while sitting on my terrace.

Was there a disadvantage with wireless technology?

The sound quality dropped a bit with music.

How was the battery charge?

Fine, I managed to listen to a hold game and then some on one charge.

IFA

IFA16 Highlights

Bang and Olufsen

Futuristic minimalism in the shape of a cone from Bang and Olufsen, always known for superior sound quality, the brand played to its strength by introducing two wireless 360 degree speaker designs, the small BeoSound 1 and larger BeoSound 2.  Both are rechargeable with a battery life of 16 hours.   The shining models stuck out but I liked the softer toned ones.

Sphero

Star Wars Fans will have hours of fun with the motion controlled BB8 droid.   The wrist band enables the user to push and pull the droid with arm gestures.  The app describes in details how to full use the small robot.   I saw a demonstration.  It could get addictive, connective toys are the future.

Aedle

Designed and made in Paris, Aedle headphones are for those looking for a subtler but higher style quality with headphone gear.  Constructed with fine leather and other materials there are two choices to choose, over ear or in-ear, both are elegant.   When I travel to Paris I will interview the team behind the brand.

Philips

The consumer brand giant had two products we liked.  The new Innergizer blender can mix anything in a moment.  The second appliance we played with was the Air Cooker, no grease, or oil is needed, all is done by recycled hot air even French Fries.

ZTE

Affordable high end smartphone from the ZTE with Axom 7 mini, a smaller version of the company’s flagship phone but still packing a punch using Android 6.0  OS featuring a 5.2 inch screen, all metal body and curved designed. it delivers a number of good features without breaking the bank including  Dolby Speakers and a 16 megapixel camera.

Huawei

I handled the phone, it is smooth and stylish but what attracted me the most were the colors blue and red.  It is slim and light with a Leica camera.  I have not tested the device yet but soon.

Honorable Mentions

coffeecreamshell
Coffee and Cream

How does the brand fuse fashion without sacrificing sound quality?

Sonus faber has been handcrafting the finest loudspeakers in the industry for almost 40 years.

Sound quality is our heritage, and elegance is in our DNA.

Every single one of our speakers was designed with a unique design and unparalleled sound quality.

The same applies with PRYMA, the same taste, the same meticulous details and craftsmanship have been applied to the headphones, being assembled by hands at the Sonus faber,  Italy.

For audiophiles, what is the top feature Pryma?

From an audiophile standpoint, PRYMA headphones are very efficient since they can be driven by any sort of devices. If you want to get extra performances you can attach it to HP amplifier.

The sound quality is as pure as it gets. PRYMA headphones translate the way the artist intended the music to sound.

What are the materials used for the headphones?

Our headphones are composed of Italian leather (the headbands) and Italian aluminum (the shell), sourced from the nicest luxury and fashion material providers in Italy.

Then, the ear cups are either composed of Premium carbon fiber or acoustically tested polycarbonate.

With comfort being so important for the wearer is there a lot of adjustment needed for your headsets?

Sonus faber and Pryma designer, Livio Cucuzza, made sure that the headphones look as good as they sound. And like an Italian tailor made suit, they are perfectly fitted for the wearer’s ears.

One of the nicest features is the fact that they are extremely modulable, and the user can adjust the headbands with a unique buckle and clasp system, an elegant solution.

Are there any plans to expand to the model collection?

Yes, PRYMA is now a big part of The McIntosh Group, and will grow even bigger in the future!

We are already working on many exciting projects that I am sure you will have the chance to see soon in the Luxury and Fashion world.

Pryma headphones are available in luxury stores including Colette Paris and Barney’s New York City.

I’ll Never Write My Memoirs by Grace Jones

What do you do when you are a legendary performer who has influenced everyone from Madonna to Annie Lennox to Lady Gaga? Write a book of course!

CaptureGJ1
Grace Jones (with doll) and siblings as a child in Spanish Town.

Born in a religious family of Jamaica, Grace Beverly Jones did not set out to make her mark as a singer, model, actress, and fashion icon but instead studied to become a teacher when the acting bug struck while doing Community Theater in college.

Capture GJ3
At Studio 54 NYC.

A biography spanning her early years as a struggling actress going so far as to live in the nude for a year, then moving to Paris becoming a roomy with a future supermodel and an Oscar winning actress. Jones became the toast of the Studio 54 era with her over the top performances in the legendary club entertaining then dancing alongside Liza Minelli, Bianca Jagger, and Andy Warhol. She became the living definition of the word “fierce” in the underground scene of New York.

CaptureGJ4
Performing in London with the fade haircut.

Iconic, trendsetter, disco diva, and trailblazer,  Jones was first modern female performer to bend the rules of gender, he/she looks with fashion as well as with those distinctive box fade or close shaved haircuts. Before Madonna, she wore the famed body hugging bustier.

Capture GJ2
Still from Grace Jones-A One Man Show.

I would not call this a reflective biography as more of a recollection of events of a determined artist who did things the way she wanted to do them in a world that was not quite sure how to define her.   That was a good thing.

I’ll Never Write My Memoirs is available on Amazon or at local bookshop.
