A rainy cloud filled 2024 Christopher Street Day hit the city July 27th. Seventy-five trucks slinked through the capital on a ten kilometre journey finishing in Tiergarten at the Siegessäule Column. The weather did not dampen the spirit, just fewer naked bodies on the parade route. This year’s theme “for diversity and democracy” is a call for different communities to unite during these tense times.

Recently, I noticed more filmmakers focusing on the plight of women in the Middle East. Once upon Beirut was called The Paris of the Middle East. A once prosperous city with a freewheeling spirit population made up of diverse groups. Now, the Mediterranean capital struggles with corruption, simmering conflict and citizens looking for an escape hatch. All if these elements come together in Mira Shaib’s first film Arze describes itself as a comedy drama of titular character Aze trying to stay afloat with a teenage son and an emotional challenged sister while dreaming of a way to earn more money by buying a scooter. The irony of making life easier turns into a nightmare when the moped is stolen. What follows is a tale of urban frustration rooted in survival.

Christopher Street Day Berlin arrived in Berlin. The seventy-three truck strong parade attracted it’s usual colorful revelry all in the name of PRIDE.
Before Amazon and shopping online, mail order catalogs dominated the long distanced retail landscape. Buyers browsed pages for merchandise before purchasing. Specialty catalogs rose from the advent of targeting certain customers. International Male was one such catalog. The menswear label from INTERNATIONAL MALE launched in 1976 from a beach shack in San Diego. Founder Gene Buckard’s homoerotic masculinity vision of fashion became an instant success. An aspirational fantasy of gorgeous men with a six packs covered the pages.
Writer Peter Jones and directors Byran Darling and Jesse Reed document the story of the rise and fall of a once trend setting catalog. ALL MAN-THE INTERNATIONAL MALE STORY is fun to watch for the nostalgic feeling of getting a fun piece of mail.

The Christopher Street Day Berlin celebration came roaring back in 2022. After two years in a moribund state, Gay Pride hit the streets of the capital city for a 7k walk of fun and pride. Walking around I witnessed everyone celebrating having a good time. In the words of George Clinton, “Free Your Mind and Your Ass will follow”.
