Tech Coming Soon

The IFA Innovations Media Brief 2022 took place July 13th and 14th. The annual technology preview event happened seven weeks before the launch Berlin consumer electronic show after a two year absence due to Covid.

While a smaller than past IMB’s gathering, the atmosphere was enthusiastic if not intimate. Pinpointing a micro trend, staying comfortable in the house, as the world has gone through lock downs, appliance producers showed off gadgets for nesting indoors.

Being a sucker for an invitation, Tineco sent me an invite to check out their new dry-wet mop. No more back bends or hands in dirty water, sounds promising. The Chinese brand introduced the Floor One S5 cleaning device with screen, a very high tech mop. Would I buy it? Yes.

German home ware maker Karcher showed off a new white minimalistic air purifier design with a trace of the brand’s yellow trademark. The shocking part of the new device, no app. The user has to physically operate the new gadget. Would I buy it? Maybe

Swiss luxury coffee machine maker showed off their newest counter top cafe product with an LCD display along with more features for coffee lovers. Would the Jura? Pricey.

Berlin start up Mitte Home unveiled a mineral water purifying home appliance using cartridges. Would I buy it? I have to think it.

The other Swiss brand, Bru served up a hassle free way of making tea without mess. Would I buy it? Maybe.

Others

Honorable mention presentations at IFA IMB.

Bosch introduced a new graphite washer machine. The white good appliance had a startling look.

Miele’s high end smooth kitchen aesthetic deserve a look featuring smooth edges and clean surfaces.

A Repair not Throwaway conference was interesting. As the world becomes more concerned about the planet, tech garbage filling up landfills is big concern.

IFA 2022 takes place in Berlin from September 2nd to September 6th. Looking forward to it.

One Survived The Rain,

The Jabra Elite Earplugs, I got a pair in the mail from the public relations agency. I already use the brand’s Evolve 2 on hear device.

My recommendation: Get a pair. The bluetooth earbuds are a solid superior piece of music gear with voice prompts and noise cancellation features. For daily use at the gym for my 90 minute routine, there have never been problems with the fitting during workouts. Tap features make for easy use and connectivity with with my music playlist.

Thankfully the Elites are waterproof. One dropped from my back on the side walk in front of my flat. It rained the same night. I went looking the next day, found it, placed the bud in the recharger case, worked as if nothing happened.

After using a cheaper brands headphone, The Elite 75 pro has a superior sound quality. I have used the microphone because normally, I do not take so many calls on my smartphone.

Battery life is good, I normally recharge the two after days usage.

The Futurist Filmmaker

Filmmaker Alton Glass could have gone the easy way to make his film POV:Points of View, but decided to push filmmaking technology to a new realm. For some, the future will have the same choices as the present and past.

The interview with Mr. Glass.

Director Alton Glass

Are you a futurist/technologist?

I enjoy both but I’m just a Storyteller using technology to prototype and reimagine the future.

You used state of the art cinema technology to tell an all too familiar story, is this irony?

Yes irony on many levels. I’ve learned narratives and algorithms are essentially the same thing. The impact and evolution of both can be beneficial or detrimental in many ways.

In your vision of the future, should citizens be concerned about the state?

Citizens should be aware and examine what’s happening with the state so you have agency at all levels where your civil liberties can be impacted.

What attracted to you filmmaking? Was there a particular film or director?

Robert Townsend and Michael Shultz who made Five Heart Beats and The Last Dragon. I fell in love with how they captured characters and their journey of growth. I love discovering the hidden gifts that we often don’t know was inside us all this time when you thought you were not enough no matter what time in your life. We create reality and I enjoy seeing those ups and downs as that power unfolds on screen or in any medium.

How will VR influence filmmaking?

I’ve heard the term Story living by Vicki Dobbs Beck at ILM and I think there’s a convergence of the two worlds of traditional filmmaking and immersive technology that will evolve into something special. I’m still learning so the influence and reward I see now is challenging storytellers to think outside the frame and understand the richness of a multi dimensional world. VR takes you from filmmaking to literally world building.

It might not be my generation who brings VR to it’s fullest potential but I’m happy to plant the seed and see where diverse voices will take immersive storytelling in the years to come.

POV:Points of View screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. Running Time: 16 Minutes

Tech is Back

“Tech is Back” the message to IFA 2020 tech attendees for a year in upheaval. As with everything in our present reality, Covid-19 hangs over events big and small. When the Messe Berlin team announced in May the plan to go ahead with the fair, I had of surprised reaction. This years Mobile World held in Barcelona got cancelled. Many industry brands pulled out due to health concerns.

Skepticism ran high, the continent is registering uptakes with infections, unplanned quarantines coming from certain countries. Planning normal travel can be difficult, but these days it goes beyond challenging. Attending my first big event in the “New Normal” gave me anxiety. I had many expectations.  As days rolled closer to the opening of IFA on September 3rd. I waited for an email reading “Cancelled”.  None came.

On the first day of the 3 day IFA 20, the difference from past years was apparent, fewer people. I walked in, no crowd, no hassle. I walked in the media and press hall furnished socially distanced low back chairs. Without exhibitor stands, these halls are massive. Event press conferences were a mix of digital and live presentations. Shift and NEXT Innovations held in The Cube was more intimate.  The present trend in technology, not a hard guess. Connections and gadgets for making home stays more comfortable.

Highlights

Discovered higlights at IFA 20 Special edition.

The tech sector cannot fault the IFA team for trying this year. #Thisyearisdifferent. Trying to get back to “normal” is easer said than done.

Bob, a mini dishwasher requiring 3 liters of water for washing 4 place settings in 20 minutes while using UVA disinfecting technology.  Designed by D.A.A.N. Tech from France.

Cardi B’s summer hit song “WAP” places female needs to an in the front and center. Women want to get their groove on. Satisfyer adult toys come in many shapes and sizes. Plus, they connect to Spotify.

Fitbit released new gear. I saw the watch  but I have never used the brands device. Hopefully, in  the future I will have a review.

The future of social interaction without being there, GoBe Robots has a solution, a smiling face while practicing social distancing. Mobile digital screens putting the user at the center of meetings.

Because we couldn’t  have  hands on experience with devices introduced digitally. I decided to skip writing about those gadgets.
