Raf Simons at Calvin Klein

Raf Simons made his debut at Calvin Klein during NYWFW.  I can honestly say I had no clue what was going on concerning the collection.  An iconic American brand in need of restart Mr. Simons with his pedigree was suppose to give a boast to the label,  make it Chic Again.

Simons first collection is a bit of everything looking for direction.  CK has been a brand known for minimalism, sexuality, and denim.

His interpretation of denim is to make it like a rigid Catholic School uniform.  The Minimalistic  looks were like crayons out of a box, a bit of a mess. The Sexy looks were more vulgar with the Nude Sheer Shirts for men.

I have high hopes for the designer even if this collection was a bit of a  misfire feeling like a vintage reworking. Raf’s  work at Jil Sander and his own label were the stuff of legends.

Berlin Fashion Week Review

Berlin based designer Lana Mueller, Lana Mueller and co-owner Gelena Roizen, are known for creating feminine looks.   The designing duo has a preference for lace but this season their collection incorporated leather fabrics.  Combining strong with soft fabrics is never easy.  In my opinion the sheer and solid lace looks were stronger compared to the mixed material dresses.  The leather pieces of the collection lacked dramatic impact or excitement.

Martin Margiela Spring 2017

Martin Margiela, the fashion worlds deconstructionist Garbo because of his aversion to interviews and being photographed launched his house in 1988.   The Royal Academy of Arts graduate rejected fashion as a luxury form but instead used vintage and old materials incorporated into new looks and designs.  The historical aesthetic of this brand is about pick and mix with forms.

John Galliano has been the Creative Director of the label since 2015.  I admit it, I was excited when it was announced Mr. Galliano would take the helm of the brand, a perfect match of the whimsical combined with different elements of inspirations.  Both the house and its new head were not afraid to play with proportions or fabrics; there was the mutual history of exploration.

When it was confirmed I could see the Spring-2017 collection up close and personal it was a dream come true.  I saw the details, touched the material, it gave me real appreciation of the collection.  For me, the transparent blouse was great.  There were pieces inspired by backpacks; skirts with broken pieces of CD’s and interpretations of the classic trench coat were other highlights.

Margiela has always been a label with a certain style, but still endures.

A BIG THANK YOU to the Margiela Team.

New York Fashion Week

Tis the season of the Big 4 Fashion Weeks starting with New York.

The collections I liked so far:

Lacoste was a surprise by going for something completely different. The crocodile disappeared in favor exciting colored prints.

Alexander Wang paid homage to the 60’s Hippie Culture of California.

Herve Leger mixed mini dresses with pants that hugged the body. The attitude of the looks was “if you want to be sexy, be sexy.”

Cushnie et Ochs veered toward the 90’s with some looks that would have been at home on BET Videos.

Yes, the Givenchy collection was sensual in black and white with direct influences to ladies slips and bedroom wear. I liked it but the hype surrounding the show the NYC made it hard to give an honest opinion.

Ralph Lauren was dependable, wearable moving from colors to western slim gaucho bottoms.

Victoria Beckham kept it simple but rich.

I liked some Prabal Gurung’s Nepal inspired looks especially the off the shoulder ones but the prints were equally intriguing.

Edun’s collection had an Art-Deco feel to it with vibrant colors.

Rag and Bone went with jackets, parkas, and sweater points with ankle lengths.

Reem Acra decided on the exotic with vivid colors teamed with short hemlines then moved to floor length knockout gowns.

Tommy Hilfiger island looks were classic fun.

Greg Lauren using denim cowgirl motifs with hats made for a sexy collection.

Jason Wu is moving in a new direction with Boss with more relaxed fresh looks that work for the day.

Proenza Schouer went for the tailored to the body with an emphasis on the waist.

Oscar de la Renta was inspired by Ava Gardner for a collection heavy with prints and red but I liked the bow looks.

Ralph Lauren had a stunning collection that was a mixture of breezy and sophisticated.

Fall Fashion Trends

Fall Trends from Bloomingdale’s of New York Fashion Director of Ready to Wear Brooke Jaffe.

  1. The color Bordeaux:  A top color for the season, Bordeaux is a rich, warm hue that tends to look good on everyone.  I can’t wait to wear a pair of Bordeaux cords with a great pair of boots and a chunky sweater.   A colored leather jacket is a great update to your fall wardrobe and pairs perfectly with denim in all colors from blue to gray, to black to ivory.  Also, don’t be afraid to try a monochrome look and wear head to toe Bordeaux!
  2. The romantic blouse:  I’m always looking for ways to update denim looks.  The fall runways provided endless inspiration for how to do that with a romantic blouse this season.  I love more exaggerated styles that have a Victorian feel with details like a high neck and delicate lace.  Romantic blouses from Alice + Olivia and Dylan Gray are some of my favorite pieces from our fall 100% Bloomingdale’s collection.  I can’t wait to pair these pieces with a boot cut jean or a black pencil skirt for an updated dinner-outlook.
  3. Plaid and military combinations:  I love mixing a plaid shirt or shirtdress with a military green anorak (such as our exclusive one this season from Velvet).  Continue to pile on the layers by adding a fur scarf.  The combination feels new when styled together this season.  Pairing this look like a leather mini or distressed jean and a more casual boot really completes it.  For a solid foundation, I recommend Rails plaid shirts!
  4. Prints:  I was so excited to see prints dominating the fall runways.  Retro scarf prints inspired by the 60’s and 70’s are making a comeback in a big way this season.  I love these prints on everything from dresses to blouses.  One of my favorites is our 100% Bloomingdale’s Nanette Lepore dress- not only is the print great, but I love the mock neck detail.
